Women Behind the Scenes Spotlight: Stephanie Morgenstern
Today’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is shone on actress turned writer, producer, director and series creator Stephanie Morgenstern.
Stephanie was born in Geneva, Switzerland but was raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada where she began her career as an actress at the age of 15. She earned a BA in English from McGill University and studied drama at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts. She later moved to Toronto to purse her MA at York University’s Graduate Programme in Social and Political Thought.
She worked as an actress for over 20 years in film and in theatre as well as providing the voice for Sailor Venus in the cult anime series Sailor Moon.
In 2001, she directed, co-wrote and co-starred with Mark Ellis (her husband and creative partner) in the critically acclaimed World War II short called Remembrance, which earned them a Genie Award nomination [among other award recognitions].
She and Mark were co-creators, writers and executive producers on the popular Canadian crime drama Flashpoint, which debuted in 2008 and ran for five seasons, and which also aired in the U.S.
Starting in 2015, Stephanie and Mark worked on a new project called X Company, a WWII based series – a longer version of their short Remembrance – which aired for three seasons in Canada and is currently running its third and final season right now on ION Television for U.S. viewers. Stephanie directed the two-part series finale.
