RECAP: Good Witch “In 4/4, With Emotion”
Let’s take a look at what happened on Sunday night’s new episode of Good Witch. The tagline for the second episode of the show’s fourth season follows:
“An unpublished song written by a past guest at Grey House magically spreads throughout the town, heightening the emotions of those who hear it; affecting each in a different way, Cassie and Sam learn to communicate about their future together.”
A Formal Announcement
It might not have been a formal announcement to the entire town, but with Cassie telling Mayor Martha Tinsdale about her and Sam’s engagement – which took place right after Martha’s son’s wedding – Cassie might as well have made a town-wide proclamation. But given that Martha was preparing for a big rededication of the local Salt Creek Bridge her thoughts were pretty preoccupied with how to compete with her husband’s original dedication of that bridge many, many years ago.
Making a Find
A piano was dug out of storage at Grey House that ended up containing quite a “find.” A songwriter by the name of Jacob Hayward – who in the world of Middleton was as well-known as Cole Porter, the Gershwins and Irving Berlin – lived in the town near end of his life, leaving behind undiscovered sheet music inside the piano seat. Sheet music that was, of course, found by Sam, who showed off his playing skills on yet another musical instrument. And, eventually that “new” song seemed to spread across town, affecting people in very different ways.
Welcome Back
It’s been awhile since viewers have seen Grandpa George, daughter-in-law Tara or even Nick’s former girlfriend Courtney, but all three of them returned in last night’s episode. I don’t know how much more we’ll see of each of them, but it was a welcome surprise to see them back. Perhaps we’ll get to see Tara’s husband Brandon, his sister Lori or maybe even Sheriff Sanders.
Back in the Saddle Again
Part of the focus of the episode was on Stephanie, who we learned in last week’s premiere broke things off with her boyfriend Ben. Abigail being who she is, tried to convince [nee “help”] Stephanie to get “back in the saddle again.” But her well-intentioned actions – getting her former dates – a lawyer, a firefighter and a tennis pro – to ask Stephanie out somewhat backfired. I think Abigail needs to let Stephanie find her own dates from now on.
Jumping the Gun
One of the “side effects” of that newly discovered piece of sheet music by Jacob Hayward caused Sam to become a bit too gun-ho about his and Cassie’s wedding plans. He seemed very intent on getting all of their plans set without taking into consideration what Cassie wanted for their big day. In true Good Witch fashion, though, Sam and Cassie had a heart-to-heart about working together to plan their wedding.
A Surprise Visit
As the episode came to an end, Abigail answered a ring at the front door of Grey House to discover her long-estranged father standing at the door. It will be interesting to see how that surprise visit plays out.
