RECAP: The 100 “Red Queen”
“You are Wonkru or you are the enemy of Wonkru. Choose!”
Those words became ominous in last night’s episode of The 100, as viewers got to see what happened down in the bunker after Praimfaya. The second episode of the fourth season spent a lot more time focused on the 46th day after the death wave hit the Earth than last week’s season premiere because there was actually quite a bit of story to play out.
Since all of the people in the bunker are basically trapped underground they are confined – unlike Clarke who had a lot of territory to cover. The bulk of the episode was focused on Kara Cooper – one of the survivors from The Ark – and a small group of members of Arkadia, who decided to take back the bunker for themselves, which was the original plan. Everyone from Arkadia was going to take refuge in the bunker, but then Octavia won the Conclave and forced the issue that everyone on the ground was going into the bunker.
In retaliation, Kara and her “team” took over the Farm – where all of the food and water for the bunker are maintained – shutting out all of the other ‘krus’ except for many of the members of Skaikru. But by doing this, Kara basically started an underground gang war.
To counteract the ever-growing hostilities, Octavia heads down to one of the lower levels of the bunker with Jaha to shut down the power to the Farm. Of course the plan doesn’t quite work out as expected because Jaha does not want any of the innocents to be hurt. He demanded that Octavia make sure that only the guilty are punished. That’s where that line of dialogue became ominous. Octavia took out about a dozen people – eventually being covered in their blood [inevitably making herself the Red Queen, by the way] – before gaining access to the Farm and taking control of the stressful situation.
But in doing so, Octavia created a deadly gladiator-like scenario – “win the fight, save your life” – that propelled them six years in the future where these fights have continued as part of the bunker’s bizarre justice system.
It was also in this episode that we found out that Abby and Kane are having relationship issues because Abby was angry at Kane for bringing her into the bunker before the Praimfaya hit and that Jaha’s life came to an end after fighting off one of the other “kru” members in order to protect that little boy Ethan he took on as his ward.
