RECAP: When Calls the Heart “Weather the Storm”

By  |

Last night’s new episode of When Calls the Heart focused on the characters weathering different storms. Here is the official description for the episode entitled “Weather the Storm:”

Bill gets put in serious jeopardy while transporting AJ to face trial; Abigail tries to save the town from an investor who will hurt Hope Valley; Carson faces a life-and-death medical decision; Elizabeth tries to reunite a mother and her son.

School Assignment

The town of Hope Valley woke up to a chill in the air, prompting teacher Elizabeth Thornton to give her class a new assignment: learning about the weather. The main focus was on Emily and Harper who were paired together to study and make a presentation on the wind. Unfortunately, Harper – believing he wasn’t any good at science – did very little work on the presentation, leaving most of the work on the shoulders of Emily. They both learned a valuable lesson that they need to work together to weather their studies.

Transferring a Fugitive

As we all know, AJ Foster turned herself into Sheriff Bill Avery, and he was transporting her to Cape Fullerton to stand trial. Of course, their trip turned into a series of travails, first in the form of the weather and then dealing with a snake bite. AJ did her best to help treat his injury, but as night was setting in – and both of their horses taking off on them – they had to wait for daylight to get to help.

But when Bill woke up the following morning, AJ was MIA. At first it looked like AJ had run off to avoid her trial, but she had actually gone off to seek help, bringing several Mounties with her – one of which was a doctor who had anti venom.

A surprising little twist was that Bill, knowing the prosecutor in Cape Fullerton, asked for a favor, getting AJ a deal where she will serve less time that Henry Gowen; and planted a long-awaited kiss on AJ before she left with the Mounties who would take her to Cape Fullerton.

Investor vs. Investor

At the end of last week’s episode, it was obvious that the Hope Valley bank manager, Mr. Jenkins, had made a handshake agreement with Joshua Baxter, one of two investors brought into town to help the bank with its massive financial issues. But given what was learned about Baxter, it was apparent the town was not going to want him as the bank’s investor. However, the second investor – Greta Preston – was one tough cookie when she learned about Baxter’s background and the agreement with Jenkins.

Thankfully, Elizabeth weathered that storm by contacting Mrs. Preston’s long-estranged son Duncan, who came to Hope Valley to seek his mother’s forgiveness for a long ago insult with his wife and two young children in tow. With the cherubic faces of her grandchildren watching her, Mrs. Preston not only forgave her son but also agreed to fund the Hope Valley Bank.

A Risky Surgery

Carson’s sister-in-law Rhonda – his late wife Amber’s sister – came to Hope Valley for more than a social visit. It turned out that she was diagnosed with a brain tumor – just like her sister – and was hoping that Carson could help her. But given that Amber died when Carson operated on her tumor, Carson did not want to risk the same thing with Rhonda. He contacted a well-known surgeon, Dr. Ellis, who eventually telegraphed that he believed the surgery was too risky.

Unfortunately, Rhonda’s condition worsened near the end of the episode, making it necessary for Carson to risk the surgery. It was thanks to Faith given him a stern pep talk that perhaps his experience with Amber’s surgery just might be able to save Rhonda. In the end, Carson weathered his own doubts with Rhonda seemingly making it through the surgery.
