VIDEO! The Expanse Author & Producer Talk S3 Breakout Character, Their Favorites & Political Relevance

It’s no secret I love Syfy’s gripping series The Expanse. Season three is almost upon us and I’m excited to share some details with you. Check our our video interview with producer Mark Fergus and author and Ty Franck as they met with press at San Diego Comic Con 2017.

Drummer (Cara Gee) Chief of Security of Tycho Station has a huge part in season three. She is the the one fans need to look out for in the upcoming season. “She’s got a really cool arc this season. I think everyone will be totally excited about that arc this season.”, said author, Mark Fergus.

“To me the book is about The Belters really. They are the most interesting. They are literally like a new form of humanity.”

Mark freely admitted he is #TeamBelter all the way. “To me the book is about The Belters really. They are the most interesting. They are literally like a new form of humanity. An entire new branch of the human tree opens up because of where they work and because their environment changes. That’s why The Belters are the the coolest.”  Ty Franck reports he would want to be on the Canterbury. “I have the wanderlust. I would get bored living in one place. There’s pieces of Alex that are definitely pulled from my wanderlust.”

“Humans just keep making the same idiot mistakes
over
and over again.”

The Expanse is known for it’s uncanny relevant topics in relation to present day reality. Both men admit that this is unintentional as the series was written many years earlier. However, the authors are both students of history and pull their plot lines from the past. Ty Franck explained The Expanse is relevant today because “Humans just keep making the same idiot mistakes over and over again.” Daniel added “I agree. It’s all looking backwards and going,  ‘Yep, here we go again!’ It seems relevant but only because the wheel endlessly turns.  That’s kind of the point of the books. Is there any way out of that perpetual cycle of stupidity that we seem to have mastered?”

The creators also love the technical details of the show. “The more realistic it is the more people connect to it.”, said Mark. “It makes the peril feel real. When just putting the brakes on and turning around can kill you, suddenly everything seems more dangerous.” That perceived peril definitely comes across on the screen. Syfy does a fantastic job of translating the books into an intelligent blend of science, intrigue, politics, violence and humor and season three is sure to continue that trend.

The Expanse season three airs April 11, 2018 at 9/8c and picks up immediately following the emotional end of second season finale. The thirteen episode series continues to explore the conflicts between Earth, Mars and The Belt. The three factions vie for power and control in an effort to solve the secret of the newly revealed protomolecule which could jeopardize the survival of the entire solar system.
