VICTORIA: “The Engine Of Change” is Disconcerting {Recap}
Victoria is on the bring of many changes, neither of which appeal to the Queen at all.
Victoria (Jenna Coleman) is pregnant, which is frustrating for her – fearing that she will be like Princess Charlotte and die giving birth – but that means that she needs Parliament to approve of Prince Albert (Tom Hughes) as her regent in case she dies and the child survives.
Albert, to his credit, is taking an active role in trying to understand what Victoria does, while also trying to know about his new home (he spends much time memorizing the trades and important facts of each county).
However, neither of those changes are welcome by everyone. Victoria spends much of the episode frustrated by Albert wanting to be active in the live of the country, especially with Albert’s interest in the railroad. She is equally frustrated and fearful of the pregnancy.
To try and ease the role of Albert, though, Victoria goes on a trip into Tory counties to meet some of the landed gentry, as an attempt to get Albert more support.
The trip, though, doesn’t go as planned. Albert’s interest in the railroads is too much for Victoria until she finally rides a small locomotive on Sir Robert Peele’s land, but Albert and Peele sharing that interest gets Albert the Regency.
Albert’s style of shooting is also at odds with some of the gentry, and while that could be used to push him away from the Regency, it doesn’t.
Victoria‘s season finale airs in two weeks on March 5th on PBS.
