Malcolm Barrett – Rufus on Timeless

1. How similar to Rufus are you?
Rufus is all of my best, most virtuous and vulnerable qualities. Also, I went to a math and science high school (Stuyvesant) and lived in ‘Do or Die’ Bed-Stuy so there are some parallels between my character’s backstory and my actual life. I feel very comfortable in his skin.

2. Is there a specific time or famous person you would like to see Timeless explore?
I would love to see Timeless explore the Harlem Renaissance or the Dumas family, they’re stories are ripe with intrigue, art, literature and politics.

3. You are an actor, poet, started a theater company, rapper, the list goes on. Do you have a favorite project across any of those genres that you would like more people to know about?
My theatre company, Ammunition Theatre has been a big passion for me. It’s a non-profit company filled with talented NYU buddies of mine as well other awesome folk. We have strong accomplished females and people of color creating producing and writing with us and our next piece by playwright Zakiyyah Alexander , a dark comedy entitled “How To Raise A Freeman”, goes up in March. We work with a charity organization every year, this year it’s the POPS foundation, which dedicates itself to informing and supporting the family of those imprisoned.

4. Now that season one of Timeless has finished filming – do you have an upcoming project we can watch out for?
Hold on, let me check IMDB… Apparently, I’m in “War On Everyone” from John Michael McDonough, an amazing, funny, violent & irreverent film about a couple of dirty cops taking on even bigger criminals, incredible ensemble. Plus I make an appearance on a the new show “Dimension 404”, it’s a quirky anthology show in the vein of a more optimistic “Black Mirror” or “Twilight Zone.”

5. Favorite fan interaction?
Most of my fan interactions are amazing, and usually at comic-con. It’s always cool when I meet nerds like myself who get excited to meet a character they like, but my favorite might have been my first comic-con. I stood in front of a ride promoting our show, my face plastered 20ft. high across a public wall with a huge line down the block. The show had yet to air so people had no idea who I was. I even filmed myself talking to fans who had no idea who I was. It was one of my first Instagram posts.

No one knows who I am!!!! Lol #timeless

6. Charity you support?
My theatre company’s a non-profit, this year we worked with POPS and last year we worked with My Friend’s Place which dedicates itself to providing food, shelter, clothes and info for homeless and displaced youth. Also, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU… I’m mad into having rights and helping poor folk have access to better opportunities. It’s my shit… Sorry. Do nice guys talk like that…?
