PITCH: Three Tough Breaks from “The Break” {Recap}

By  |

Pitch ran head first against an exciting Game Five in the National League Divisional Series (my Dodgers came out on top in a game that is going to be remembered for a very long time), but the final game in a best of five series also highlighted some of the tough breaks in baseball that came to a head in tonight’s episode.

Let’s dig into the tough life of a baseball player.

Family Comes ?

The episode revolved around the All-Star Game, the annual National League vs American League game that determines home field for the World Series, and Ginny (Kylie Bunbury) and Blip (Mo McRea) getting to play thanks to popular demand and injuries. It’s just too bad that Ginny’s mom was in town to spend time with Ginny while the game went on and Blip’s family had a trip to Disney world planned. When does family take precedence over the job that pays the bills?

Growing up around baseball players, I know how hard this can be. I went to school with (and played soccer with) a famous pitcher’s daughter and there were times when Dad wouldn’t show up because he was playing in a big game. It’s hard to balance the life of a player-parent, just as it’s hard to balance the life of a player-child.

Neither Ginny nor Blip won that battle in the end.

Where Do You Go from Here?

Ginny’s big dilemma in the episode is if she deserves to be in the game? She worries after it after the call is made to tell her because she’s not what she imagines an All-Star to be. Is she one of the best in baseball? She thinks not, but what she does have is name recognition and a cache that has livened the sport.

Mike Lawson (Mark-Paul Gooselaar) is fighting a losing battle with his back and his knees (let’s just say his whole body) and trying to figure out where he’ll go after he’s finished playing. Trying to be an analyst is hit and miss, but when he gets it right, he points out how much of baseball is watching people fail. The best batters missed hitting a ball for a base almost seventy percent of the time.

Make It or Break It

Livian Duarte (Christian Ochoa) is a hot new prospect, fresh from defecting from Cuba. Every time in baseball wants him, and Oscar Arguella (Mark Consuelos) goes all the way to Amsterdam to try and convince Livian to play for the Padres. While the Padres can’t offer Livian all the money that other teams can, Oscar can promise being part of a family and being understanding of what it’s like to be a player in the league.

Livian wants to start in San Diego soon, and what does that mean for Mike?

For my sanity, there’s some time off as the baseball play-offs continue. I can’t take too much more of the fictional drama and the real drama.

Pitch returns Thursday October 27th at 9PM on Fox.
