PITCH: Four Reasons Ginny Isn’t One of the Guys {Recap}

Pitch is continuing to tackle the very notion of women in professional sports, while taking on an issue that never seems to go away from the national media – sexual assaults on college campuses.

Tonight, let’s get into the ways in which the premise of the show is still a central focus – what is a woman’s place in professional baseball?

1. She’s got the cache to be the center of the sports news with only her second start. – Two hours after a game and scores of reporters are still outside waiting to talk to her. That’s not something that even makes a professional post-game show. I listen to plenty of pre- and post- game talk shows and I watch even more on television and those soundbites are certainly more fodder for the likes of morning sports radio than anything else. If Colin Cowherd wants to talk about you enough on his show, it’s the big time.

2. Work Outs – Ginny’s working with less muscle strength than most of her teammates, so she’s in the locker room gym hours and hours before most the guys (save Mike, whose bad knees mean he needs more strength to get through a game). Then she eats enough to feed about three guys after that workout.

3. Woman to Woman – Rachel Patric (Guest Star JoAnna Garcia Swisher) is dead set on Ginny talking about a sexual assault of a female track athlete, but Ginny wants none of it. No one else on the Padres was asked to speak on the matter, which just goes to show how clear gender is an issue in Major League Baseball.

4. Mouse Away, Cats Will Play – Ginny is off at Jimmy Kimmel Live, and without her, the rest of the team is frustrated with her presence and her position. Lawson, as the team captain, makes another impassioned speech about what the game of baseball should mean. It doesn’t mean having a woman on the team is the only part they should be focusing on. While Lawson’s talking the team off the cliff, Ginny makes a speech on Kimmel that finally gets to the heart of the other media storm in sports.
