POLDARK: Four Shocking Reveals from the Premiere

By  |

Tonight marks the return of Poldark to PBS, and there are many problems facing our surly hero who likes to fight for the underdog and has wormed his way into our hearts.

When we left him at the end of last season, Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) had led many of his fellow townspeople to gather food and goods from a ship wrecked in a storm. Ross is now being tried for the crime of being there, helping his impoverished employees and the death of an excise officer.

But here were the biggest reveals from the premiere!

Francis’s Dalliance with a Gun – We’ve known that Francis is frustrated with Elizabeth’s closeness to Ross in the past episodes, but now he seems truly lost. Or maybe it’s not just Ross and Elizabeth but also what Francis has done with George Warleggan. There are issues that are going to keep haunting him until he finally explains something to someone.

New Faces – To expand the world beyond Ross’ small town, we have Caroline Penvenen, a ward to a wealthy man, and her maybe fiance who is running for Parliament. But what does Caroline really want: her intended beau or Dwight Enys? She clearly doesn’t want to listen to her guardian or her beau when it comes to the election, and her fascination with Ross and his trial makes me more than a little leery.

Verity’s Return – Though she and Francis clearly haven’t spoken she married, she still shows up and supports Ross in his trial. But with all of Francis’s other issues, he forgives Verity in the end. Family truly should matter more than squabbles over marriages.

Ross’ Fate – Well, it shouldn’t have been a shocking reveal, but after all the efforts from George and his team, it failed to ruin Ross in the eyes of the law. But it does raise some questions of what else this season will explore. I doubt George will stop trying to make his plays at Ross’ mine or position. What of Demelza and her new child?

Poldark continues this fall on PBS at 8PM on Sundays.

Roz lives in the Los Angeles area, and has been a long time California girl. Despite her better judgment, she enjoys shows about the shallow sides of her home city, but will also find time to watch iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and much more. With a love of history, she also watches anything that is grounded in real life, including Victoria and black-ish. Having worked with children, she also follows shows she knows they watch (reminding her of those days of yore for her in the process). Contact her at roz@nicegirlstv.com.
