Weekly Update
Women of the Week
There are so many great women on TV each week so we get together and pick our favorites from the week.
Erin Richards as Barbara Kean on Gotham
Nominated by Bobcat: The first half of the second season, Barbara broke out of Arkham Asylum, joined a band of crazy assassins, tried to kill Gordon and his baby mama, then ends up back at Arkham in a coma after she plummeted off a roof. Now she’s awake and out of Arkham again, but this time with the blessing of Dr. Strange. In this week’s episode, she’s trying to convince Gordon that she’s “sane” and that can help him. Yet, in the course of trying to do that, she holds a knife to his throat and ties him to the chair for an underground fixer. Then cries and tell him she did it all for him. (For a recap of this week’s episode, click here.) Barbara in the Batman comic books isn’t a villain, so to see her portrayed this way on Gotham just gives the show that much more depth. Richards performance as Barbara Kean is beyond brilliant. She takes the whole “women-are-crazy” expression to a new level. I truly don’t know if she’s evil or sane at this point and for that, Richards deserves applause. It’ll be interesting to see how Barbara unravels in the final episodes of the season.
Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh as Kara Danvers and Alex Danvers
Nominated by Karen/Seconded by Rueben: for their emotionally charged performances in the Season finale of Supergirl. A stand-out scene where the sisters thought they might never see each other again had many fans “slicing onions”, and the reunion when Chyler’s character saved her sister and gave back the key to her pod (which is a necklace) had people once again tearing up.
A runner up nod to Laura Vandervoort for her portrayal of Indigo/Brainiac-8
She was deliciously evil without going over the top “muahahaha”. And a cherry on top of the Supergirl sundae was seeing Helen Slater back as Eliza Danvers – giving us three Supergirls for one low-low price.
