Highlights from the Syfy Premiere of “Wynonna Earp”

By  |

Syfy premiered their new original supernatural drama, Wynonna Earp, and I can’t wait to find out what you all thought of it. I thought it was fun and creepy and interesting and, well you get the picture.

Wynonna Earp follows the life of the great, great granddaughter of famous lawman Wyatt Earp. After a troubled adolescence following the death of her father and the disappearance of her older sister Willa, Wynonna has inherited Wyatt’s mythic abilities and his famous gun – a Colt .45 pistol with a 12-inch barrel – along with his legendary old West enemies: revenant demons. This all happens in a town called Purgatory, and we meet Wynonna on her 27th birthday, which seems to be when the Curse and her inheritance begin to manifest themselves.

Wynonna returns home for the funeral of a relative, but it’s really the way he died that draws her home. He’s murdered by a revenant demon. Ironically, on her way home, Wynonna meets a girl on the bus who also gets herself killed by demons when the bus blows out a tire and she gets off for, well, it’s a long bus ride and they’re in the middle of nowhere, so no restrooms. Upon hearing creepy noises outside, Wynonna gets off the bus in search of this girl, but the bus driver takes off and leaves them there, having been spooked by the noises. Nice.

Wynonna is welcomed home by her younger sister, Waverly, but no one else is really happy to see her. Apparently, running around saying stuff about demons living in Purgatory earned you a one-way ticket to the Marshmallow World.

As the episode continues, we see Wynonna return to the Earp homestead where she has flashbacks to the night her father died and sister, Willa, is taken away. She knows demons have returned and that she has inherited The Curse, so she goes to find The Peacemaker, Wyatt’s Colt .45 with the twelve inch barrel. It’s the only thing that can kill the demons. Did I mention they want it too?

Wynonna finds the Colt in a well on the homestead. As she leaves with the gun, someone climbs out of that well. He calls himself Henry and he’s a drifter, but we quickly learn there is more to him than he’s telling the Earp sisters.

Detective Dolls comes to Purgatory to investigate the murdered girl from the bus, but this isn’t the first case of its kind that he’s come across. He knows about demons and he knows about Wynonna and her family’s curse. He ends up recruiting Wynonna for the Black Badge Division. However, that’s all we know about Dolls. He’s not very forthcoming with the personal reveals. I’ll be looking forward to learning more about him as the series unfolds.

We learned that Waverly is a force of her own. She’s fearless, can shoot a rifle and is a virtual Wyatt family encyclopedia. She has spent the years since Wynonna left gathering every bit of information she can find on her ancestors. I feel like this is going to become really important moving forward.

“Purgatory” did a fine job of introducing us to the key characters and the storyline. It also left us with a mystery to solve and lots of questions to ponder until the next episode.
