Black Sails is currently in it’s third season and STARZ has announced it will be returning for a fourth. One of the reasons the show resonates with viewers are the beautifully brutal and complex ladies. Below is a list of why we adore mercurial women of Black Sails.

1. Calculating and clever.

These ladies aren’t just another pretty face. In the cut-throat world of pirates, the women have learned to use all their assets to not only survive, but thrive! Max once faced the most dire of circumstances, but successfully used her wits and assets to become one of the most powerful women in Nassau.

2. They play with the big boys.

Anne in particular, was thrown into the world of pirates at a tender age that would have crushed a lesser person. She is now one of the most dangerous women in all of Nassau and a major player in the possible independence of the island.

3. They embrace their own sexuality.

Elanor, Max and Anne Bonny explore love each in their own way. These ladies understand that in matters of the heart there is no black and white, only shades of grey.

4. They are loyal, sometimes to a fault, till they’re not.

Elanor could take a lesson in loyalty from Anne and Miranda, however it could be argued that her actions are perfection. Her greatest loyalty will always be to herself.

5. They are real.

Black Sails has created a world where women are as complex and confusing as real life. They are a lesson for us all who struggle, triumph, fail and get back up again.
