LUCIFER Roundtable: He Makes One Hell of an Impression
If you’ve been following along with us – you know we were excited for the premier of Lucifer. Last night’s pilot episode set the stage for a great season. Lucifer Morningstar has relocated to Los Angeles from Hell. He is tired of being the ruler down there and thought this would be a nice change of pace. The murder of a friend (yes he has friends) causes him to cross paths with Detective Decker. Together, although not all that willingly on her part, they track down the culprit.
We put a lot of emphasis on Tom Ellis and his considerable charm, but how great were the supporting characters. Who was your favorite?
Stacey: I forgot how great the supporting cast on this show is. First of all, I think I have a massive girl crush on Detective Decker. I liked her when I saw the pilot in July, but the second time around I’m all in. I think her ability to resist him is gonna make for some great chemistry in the upcoming episodes.
Trixie. That kid. I can’t even handle her.
Dr. Linda Martin. My jealousy reigns supreme. But she’s hilarious and I can’t wait to see more.
Melissa: Melissa: Our little Tom Ellis squabble has been fun, and he’s worth it, but the show works because so many of the cast are fantastic. Or at least have the potential to be fantastic. The pilot focused on establishing our leads, but from what we did see of everyone else, little Scarlett Estevez who plays Trixie is my favorite. She’s just the right amount of precocious without veering into either saccharine or obnoxious. And she seems so comfortable in front of the camera and with her co-stars already; that bodes well.
Leah: Dr. Linda was my favorite. Her bouts of lust countered with actual psychiatric advice was perfect.
Mynda: I am excited to see more from Lesley-Ann Brandt. She portrays Mazikeen who defected with Lucifer during his “Career Crisis.” The backstory on their relationship will be very illuminating. Why is Maze so loyal to Lucifer, or did Father send her? Discovering her true loyalties can make for a compelling tale.
They reshot the scenes w/Kevin Alejandro (he wasn’t the actor in the pilot we saw in July) How do you like their chemistry…or lack thereof?
Stacey: The reshoots make it nearly impossible to tell how he’s gonna fit in on this show with these guys. He was the weakest link, but I can’t fault him for that right now. We’ll see what next week holds.
Melissa: I like Kevin Alejandro, but I can’t say that he’s made much of an impression in this role just yet.
Leah: I too am a fan of Kevin Alejandro and I remember the part he took over being a little bigger in the original pilot. I’m going to hold judgement (shocking as that may be) until they get him some lines actually written for him.
Mynda: Too soon to tell on chemistry between Kevin and Lauren German. From his past roles, he is a good under-the-radar instigator.
Guesses on why our Detective Decker is immune?
Stacey: Hmmm… Not yet.
Melissa: I can’t decide if she’s just too jaded by everything she’s seen, if she doesn’t have any “deepest, darkest desires”, or if it’s something more supernatural. Lucifer did half-jokingly ask her, “Did my father send you?”
Leah: I’m curious to see how the write that. Does anyone remember the show Blood Ties? Decker being unfazed by Lucifer’s charms reminds me a lot of that show. Strong alpha woman just isn’t ruled by her body.
Mynda: My impression of Chloe’s immunity is not supernatural in nature. Luci said he brings out what is already present in someone’s true self. Chloe may actually be naturally immune because she is GENUINE.
How long until Detective Decker starts to believe Lucifer is who he says he is?
Stacey: I think she’s pretty practical- and her ability to resist him is gonna keep her skeptical for quite some time. I mean, she saw him get shot, several times, and is still holding out on the belief front. #futuremrstomellisout #thatcarthough
Melissa: I suspect she’ll be the “Scully” in this working relationship at least through the first season.
Leah: I like how open Lucifer is about it. He tells anyone who will listen that he is immortal and he doesn’t hide his ability to make people talk to him, but I suspect Decker will stay very grounded in the reality that this can’t really be happening.
Mynda: On some level, Chloe already knows the truth. When she is willing to admit it to herself will be interesting to observe.
Lucifer airs Monday 9/8c on Fox
