INTERVIEW: Grant Bowler Talks DEFIANCE Season Three
Last week we had the opportunity to speak with Grant Bowler who plays Lawkeeper Joshua Nolan on Defiance. The series just began it’s third season and I agree with Grant when he said the third season looks to be their best one yet. Grant explained the shows he worked on followed a similar arc. The first season is about one big idea. The second us usually everyone else’s’ big ideas and the third is the “sweet spot ”Defiance (this season) is “by far the best show we’ve delivered. I am extremely proud of the third season. This is the best season I’ve ever delivered. The show looks fantastic.”
The town is in the center of the conflict this season and resembles ’Soviet Russia circa 1960.” Grant also makes comparisons to California during the Gold Rush era. The outdoor market is gone because the town has been cut off. There are no goods available for sale. “Defiance is a shell of what it was.” We have this element, Gulanite, covering the mine which is impossible for their tools to penetrate. Defiance now has been “successfully infiltrated” and will face assault in season three which forces them to make an alliance with the new aliens the Omec.
So, what is in store for Nolan this season?
“Nolan is vulnerable. He’s falling apart at the seams. This season catches up with him.” “I’m in so much pain…. healing my face up fast enough before the next assault’ to the Lawkeeper is a challenge. It’s “not very glamorous to be me this season….by the time June arrives I’ll be in bed!”
Grant expands by saying “Through his (Nolan’s) vulnerability his relationship with Irisa is closer…she supports him. It’s an adult father daughter relationship.” Regarding Nolan’s relationship with Irisa, Bowler said “It’s always been my favorite part of the show.”
We were all touched when Grant explained that the interaction between Nolan and Irisa has “made me be a better father to my daughter. It always brings me back to my relationship with my children.” And, his favorite episode this season revolves around that father daughter bond. “You will know it when you get to it.”
Regarding new players, we have a lot of them. Nolan gave us the breakdown on each one:
“The Omec is an eighth race that predates them all.” When the Voltan departed their home planet they left the Omec behind to die. And now this new race, has some serious “payback to deliver to the aliens.” This race has one large flaw in that they are “arrogant because they are so old….they are very powerful creatures and we aren’t sure if we can get rid of them.”
Ram Tak is a Warlord from the Voltanis Collective who wants to kill everyone. Simply put, “Ram Tak is a megalomaniac and insane. Lee Tergensen who plays the leader, adds an “enormous amount of flair and humor to the character.” The warlord is a keen observer of human culture and Nolan gave us a bit of a tease when he said. “ Johnny Cash comes up again very late in the season.”
As soon as I receive the full transcript, I will post it below. Please join in with us, @nicegirlstv and @PxlWvr, each Friday night at 8pm as we live tweet each episode.
