12 MONKEYS Recap: Shonin

1987
Ramse shows up in Tokyo. He gets a quick understanding of just how difficult time travel is. Moments later Cole shows up but Ramse manages to hide.
Over at a club in Tokyo, where the toupees are as plentiful as the cocaine, Leland gets a first time look at the remains the virus is later pulled from. He appears not impressed. He doesn’t get very far before Cole attacks him. Cole is about to talk Goins into helping him destroy the remains when Ramse shows up. Seems he has gotten stronger since his “reentry”. He lands a number of good punches. Cole doesn’t do too bad himself. It’s a full on brawl that might have continued to the death had the owner of the club (and his gun) not intervened. So he only intervenes long enough to pull them apart and throw a switchblade at them. Ramse manages to stab Cole. It appears he is going to bleed out.

Things don’t look good for Ramse who gets picked up a few blocks from the club for stabbing Cole. As he has no social security number or identification of any kind it looks like he will be stuck in a Japanese prison for a while.

1988
Ramse is still in prison. He appears to be spending most of his time getting his ass kicked by other prisoners. Wish I felt bad about that. He’s in his cell recovering when he gets a letter. It’s from Olivia and has all sorts of information about Ramse, she says she knows who he is and she can help him. I think Olivia is the chick that is helping The Witness and the Army of the 12 Monkeys so this can’t end well.

1990
Still locked up, Ramse continues to get messages from Olivia. Books like The Art of War and encouraging messages about how she can help enrich his life. All while he continues to get the crap beat out of him.

1992
Still in prison, but now Ramse speaks Japanese and he calls out the guy that has been torturing him these past years. He tells the other inmates the guy is a snitch and they take care of them for Ramse.

1995
Ramse is sent a suit, a passport and a necklace. The necklace Jennifer gave him in 2043. The one she said was his. Next thing we know Ramse is in Virginia, pulling up to a very nice house, while we here Olivia say in voiceover, “You are the key to our next cycle.” Olivia greets him at the door. Moments later Ramse also meets Tall Man, who is wearing the same necklace Ramse was given. Olivia takes both necklaces, puts them together on a pedestal and they start to arc like Cole’s watches did when they touched. Now all of the trees and bushes turn red. Olivia seems pleased.

2011
Ramse is still with Olivia and her crew. He tells Olivia about Markridge so they invest heavily before going to a board meeting to meet Leland. Ramse introduces himself as Ethan. Leland thinks he’s met him before but as we saw there were quite a bit of drugs in Leland’s past so he doesn’t think too hard about it. Looks like Olivia and Ramse have been giving Markridge tips about upcoming conflicts (like 9/11) so they can profit.

2013
You hear Olivia talking about finding the virus while we see the massacre that killed Markridge employees and put Jennifer in the mental hospital.

2014
Olivia tells Ramse how Cole got to the last Markridge employee in Haiti. She wants to go after Cole but Ramse says to wait. Cole will show up in 2015 and they can strike them.
Also in 2014 we get to see Jennifer in the mental hospital being paid a visit by her father. She assures him she didn’t kill those people in the lab and she has been keeping his secrets. He hugs her but leaves her there. As he’s leaving he admits he knows she didn’t kill anyone but she is where she should be. He seems a little scared.

2015
We see Cole killing Leland, Tall Man visiting Jennifer in the mental hospital and attempting to get the virus out of the night room. He relays all of this to Ramse. When Cole ends up shooting him in the arm Tall Man visits Olivia. He is done with this whole period of interference. Olivia reminds him that if they don’t let the cycle play itself out Ramse would never have shown up.
We also see Cassy finding Peters after he recreated the virus and Aaron getting a visit from Olivia. All while Ramse watches from the sidelines. Ramse tells Olivia they can’t kill Cassy, it is what starts Cole jumping back into time and what brought Ramse back. Time travel is tricky like that. Olivia is wondering if they should be concerned about Cole but Ramse (without any emotion) says he killed Cole on his last jump in 1987, he isn’t a problem. Now they release the plague.

Cassy is at home watching a news story that Senator Royce (Aaron’s boss) is running for President in 2016. Aaron shows up, drunk, to let Cassy know he was let go from the Royce campaign. When he was vetted, he was found lacking, mainly her association with her. In his drunken rambling he tells her it doesn’t matter, they have insider knowledge now, they can run away before the plague starts. Save themselves. Cassy believes there is still hope, but Aaron isn’t amused.

Before getting let go by Royce Aaron asked if he could be a part of the private sector project Royce is involved in. It is something about saving a select few people in the event of a global emergency. Wouldn’t you know that is being proposed by Olivia and shocking, she needs someone to spearhead the project? Looks like Aaron has a new job.

2015
Jennifer is forcefully being brought back to the mansion Ramse and his fellow crazies stay at. She got out again, it’s something she appears to do often. Back in her room she is greeted by Olivia who creepily brushes her hair while talking about Leland. She tells Jennifer she can protect her while Ramse and Tall Man wait outside.

2043
Jones watches on her screens as Cole’s vitals show him dying. Right before Cole is about to be shot in 1987 (to finish him off) Jones manages to “grab” Cole and send him to 2015.
Whitley pours Jones a drink, they lost the tether to Cole, he is gone. Mission over. Jones isn’t sure the mission is over. In fact she is a little maniacal. Whitley however is done. He did some terrible things in the name of Jones and her mission. Whitley and a number of the residence of Spearhead pack there things and head out in search of a place to stay. Jones stays behind, she can’t leave.

2015
Cassy comes home to find a blood trail on her floor and Cole almost dead in her living room. He tells Cassy he knows why the 12 Monkeys were one step ahead of them the whole time, he knows who The Witness is. Ramse.
