What to Expect on TV in April

By  |

St. Patricks Day

First of all, I want to say Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone!

And now let’s take a look at just some of the things that TV viewers can expect on TV throughout the month of April.

The Sundance Channel will bring back their mini-series The Red Road for a second season starting on April 2 at 10 PM. Remember this is the show with Jason Momoa of Game of Thrones fame and Martin Henderson from the short-lived series Off the Map.

Outlander fans!! Droughtlander will be over on April 4 when the show’s much-anticipated mid-season premiere will finally air on Starz at 9 PM. I had the chance to see the return episode and it’s everything a fan could hope for and me, including the voice over of Jamie this time instead of Claire and plenty of action, intrigue and, what else, great moments between Jamie and Claire. Have those drool towels ready!

That same night, Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries will simultaneously air the new movie Aurora Teagarden: A Bone to Pick at 9 PM. Candace Cameron Bure stars in a movie about a librarian with a sharp mind for murder, who is known around her small town as a master sleuth. When her friend Jane unexpectedly dies, leaving Aurora everything in her will, she also leaves a troubling murder mystery haunting her neighborhood.

Easter Sunday (April 5) will be busy with the debut of two new dramas on NBC: A.D. and American Odyssey

A.D. is the follow-up to the high-rated mini-series The Bible, which chronicles the aftermath of Jesus’ crucifixion as the tiny band of followers fight for survival while they try to spread the Word to the world. This event series will air at 9 PM.

On April 6, The Originals and Jane the Virgin will both be back from short mid-season breaks on The CW at 8 and 9 PM respectively

Meanwhile American Odyssey will focus on what happens after a team of American soldiers battle Jihadists in North Africa; and one member of the team – Sgt. Odelle Ballard (Anna Friel from Pushing Daisies), a soldier, mother, wife and the unit’s only female member – is taken. This new series will air at 10 PM.

Marvel's Daredevil

On April 10, the much-anticipated Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil will debut online. Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the Super Hero “Daredevil” in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. The cast includes Charlie Cox, Rosario Dawson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson and Vondie Curtis-Hall [among others].

Another Hallmark Movies & Mysteries movie – Garage Sale Mystery: The Deadly Room – will debut at 9 PM on April 11. Sleuthing garage sale maven Jennifer Shannon (Lori Loughlin from When Calls the Heart) gets embroiled in a criminal investigation when a storage facility is the scene of a murder- and she is a key eyewitness.

April 12 will be a big night for HBO as their critically acclaimed and award-winning series Game of Thrones returns for the start of its fifth season at 10 PM.

In stark competition will be the UP Channel original movie The Music in Me that will debut that same night at 7 PM. Singer-actress Debbie Gibson will star in this telefilm about a woman named Jessica, who trades in her dreams of becoming a professional singer to care for her aging parents and their neighborhood hardware store. She is then asked to step in as choir director for a failing church as they prepare for their the big centennial celebration only to learn the choir can’t sing.

The AMC period piece drama Turn will be back for its second season with a two-hour season premiere on April 13 at 9 PM. While Gotham will finally be back from its short mid-season break with the final four episodes of its debut season that same night at 8 PM on FOX.

April 14 will find the series finale of Justified airing on FX at 10 PM.

The Messengers

The new CW series The Messengers will debut on April 17 at 9 PM. The series focuses on a handful of people who all collapsed at the same time only to miraculously come back to life hours later and the battle they will have to embark together to fight “The Man” in order to prevent the impending Rapture.

April 17 is a big night for TV viewers because it also means the return of the Canadian series Bitten, which is back for its two-hour second season premiere on Syfy at 8 PM followed by the fifth and final season premiere of the Canadian series Lost Girl at 10 PM.

Orphan Black fans have been patiently waiting for the return of the series, which will finally happen on April 18 on BBC America at 9 PM.

The same can be said for the “Hearties”, the fans of the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart. The series will be back with the start of its much-anticipated second season on April 25 at 8 PM.

When Calls the Heart S2

Lastly, the HBO mini-series The Casual Vacancy will air on April 29 with back-to-back episodes from 8 to 10 PM and the final part on April 30 at 8 PM. The mini is based on the J.K. Rowling novel, centering on Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. But, behind its pretty façade, however, is a town at war: rich at war with the poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands and teachers at war with their students.

There are plenty more movies and series to look forward to seeing during April. Please make sure to check out the April calendar when it goes live closer to the end of the month.
