12 MONKEYS Recap: The Keys
This episode takes place predominately in 2015.
CIA Headquarters – A briefing on the origins of virus strain M5-10. It was found in the remains of a person found in the Himalayans in the 80’s.Of course we weaponized it and now are going to test it. What better way than to use it in order to kill a guy, Wexler, who is leaking government secrets. Think Snowden. What could go wrong?
Cole pays Cassandra a visit, she is having some PTSD from her time with the tall scary man. Before busting Cassy out of the greenhouse last episode they did manage to grab a picture of a bowl or a plate with a monkey on it and the name, Edward Garrett, PHD. Cassy and Cole pay him a visit. He is the speaker at a gala, so they dress up all pretty and head out to see him. While there Cole gets a little emotional, admiring art and even dancing with Cassy.
Cassy breaks away from the dancing to talk to Dr. Garrett. She asks him about the picture. He says it is a ceremonial bowl used by the Druzes. They are a super-secret religion that doesn’t take converts. You are born into it. Once Cassy asks him about the Army of the 12 Monkeys he cuts her off and quickly walks away.
Aaron joins them at Cassy’s after the function where she tells him the 12 Monkeys may having ties to a religious group in Chechnya. This triggers something with Aaron who mentions that is where it is believed that Wexler is hiding out.
Cole splinters and not long after calls Cassy, he is in Chechnya, Operation Troy is happening right now. When he splintered he went a week in the future where Aaron tells him Operation Troy had already happened. So he splinters back to Chechnya to stop it. He needs Cassy help.
We flash back to Cole getting to Chechnya and following the case containing the virus. Cole grabs the case from the CIA operative right after a 12 Monkeys operative shoots at him. We see Cole call Cassy to find out how to destroy the case.
Cassy calls Aaron, she says they have to tell the CIA. The CIA doesn’t take this very well.
Armed men take Cole and the case, its Wexler and his guys. Wexler thought he was getting money, instead it’s the virus. He doesn’t listen to Cole and opens it, releasing the virus. There is a shoot-out between Wexler and his armed guys. Wexler is shot but before he dies he tells Cole the CIA was monitoring the 12 Monkeys. He remembers a briefing about a Yakuza war in 1987 at the White Dragon involving the 12 Monkeys.
Cole calls Cassy, he tells her to have the CIA destroy the facility before the Russian’s get there. They can’t risk anyone else being exposed to the virus. Cole makes Cassy promise that when she sees him in a week – she can’t tell him about his impending death. She needs to let him go so he can stop the virus. “I’m glad I got to know you Cassy.” Cassy watches on a screen as the CIA launches a missile killing Cole.
The CIA threaten Cassy and Aaron but ultimately let them go.
In a week Cole shows back up, Aaron and Cassy stick to Cole’s wishes and tells him about Operation Troy, sending Cole to his death. Cassy is barely able to hold it together, telling him goodbye before he splinters.
