MARVEL’S AGENT CARTER Comic Con Intel

Marvel’s Agent Carter doesn’t hit our screens until mid-season, but is already a much anticipated show. We spoke to the team behind the show, as well as leading lady Hayley Atwell, at Comic Con to find out what we can expect…

“You have glimpses of who she is from the Captain America films and also the one-shot, but now this is the chance to explore her limitations as a human being and having kind of go beyond that and save the day. I think there’s so much in her that’s yet to be shown to the world,” said Hayley Atwell, who plays Agent Peggy Carter.

“First of all, we’ve only seen Peggy in the other films basically at work. Now we’re going to see her at home. Maybe going on a date, maybe with friends, where she lives, and I think seeing a complete Peggy Carter now is going to be much more fulfilling and rewarding. It’s also going to wear on Peggy Carter because she’s living a dual existence, not only at work, but even at home. Wherever her friends are, whoever her friends are, she can’t be telling them ‘you know, I’m a superspy and I work for the SSR,” added executive producer Louis D’Esposito.

Marvel’s Agent Carter takes place during the 1940s, a different time period to the one we live in today, but Atwell thinks it’s still  relatable to today.

“I think it’s frightening how we haven’t actually come that far. I don’t know about the US, but in terms of in Britain, the fact that women are still not paid the same amount as men mean that we really haven’t come that far since the 40s unfortunately. I mean we may have culturally in terms of how we treat each other, how men treat women, but there’s still a long way to go. I think this period is something that men and women can still relate to,” she said.

Being set in the 1940s, also means differences in technology, but the show’s creative team are excited to take on this time period.

“I was saying I’m so happy to not have cell phones. Just creatively, it’s awesome not to have ‘cos you’re taking away the options and taking away what someone can do. It just creates drama when you’re taking away options, so I love it,” said co-show runner and executive producer, Michelle Fazekas.

The season will have eight episodes, but we can expect a lot in those eight episodes.

“We did eight episodes of Resurrection, the first season and so the way we did it on Resurrection is sort of how we’re looking at this, which is eight parts of a movie. A really nice number creatively to craft a season and really kind of make things pay off and make all the things make sense,” said Fazekas.

Marvel fans, prepare to geek out over characters that are going to appear on the show. We sure did over this little tibit!

“I think I can say that one of the characters will be Edwin Jarvis, Howard Stark’s manservant, who goes on to be a tutor for Tony,” said executive producer Steve McFeely, who also co-wrote the pilot with Christopher Markus.

“Obviously people will be seeing the SSR office and we’ll be meeting other agents that she’ll be working with, but I think the close connection between her and Jarvis is such a nice dynamic – the two hander. Though she’s a single lead, it gives her somebody that actually knows who she is because so much of her life is hidden,” co-show runner and executive producer, Tara Butters added later when asked about this news.

One of the things that Marvel does well is interconnectivity with their properties, so can we expect any characters from the film universe?

“We will make every effort to slot everybody in as story demands. Cross fingers that we get more than one season, because we’d love to move her around the country and around the world at various times,” said executive producer Christopher Markus.

Marvel’s Agent Carter will air mid-season on ABC.
