ASCENSION Finale – A Completely New Yarn
Ascension concluded it’s mind-bending tale last night and revealed some epic secrets along with some wonderful references to pop culture. The first came in the form of Lorelei’s crashing of the Ostera Celebration in true Carrie Style. This leads us to our favorite mad scientist, Harris, confirming her precognitive abilities with the phrase morphic-resonance. In the end we get a fuller picture of Enzmann’s real motives when he drops the term “Star-Child.” Hello 2001: A Space Odyssey! Honestly speaking I was fully prepared by night two to hear a “Daisy, Daisy” reference, which would have been both creepy and a delight.
As it turns out the story of Ascension creates a completely unique Science Fiction tale while taking inspiration from all the best parts of our most beloved pop-culture and fiction tales. On the whole, it creates a very satisfying new series that without using the common paint-by-number Sci-fi plot lines. I loved the revelation in the final dramatic moments with Christa exercising her new X-men hybrid abilities in saving Gault by transporting him to a new planet/world/dimension? And, that little revelation gave me a whole new level of respect for Enzmann’s epic creepy obsession. Star Trek‘s transporters can’t hold a candle to Christa! The whole idea of engineering a human mutation what would allow for instantaneous space travel is genius!
Observations:
The emergence of ALF on the Panopticon was brilliant. Of all the things that could have bled onto that monitor, seeing a fuzzy alien from space visiting earth while being hoodwinked into believing you were the space traveler is hilarious!
Did anyone else notice the little alien head key chain when Samantha switched badges? Area 51 wink alert!
Stokes reaction to the revelation of the truth was beautiful. He is a Wild Card of epic proportions and I can not wait to see what happens moving forward. He may have just been a Slaughter House worker on Ascension, but each person the ship was hand picked and genetically groomed for genius. Facing the real world will be simple child’s play for Stokes. It almost makes you feel sorry for those poor souls who come against him. I’m sure it will leave them wishing fervently for a happy pill of their own.
Was it just me or did the TC Group goons look like Men In Black?
Did you get a good look at Robert Bryce’s aka “The Inside Man’s” face? It looked unnaturally plastic. Do you think he has been a mole from the beginning? It would make complete sense that breakthroughs in longevity were made right along with all the others.
Leadership looks good on Viondra. Perhaps now they will let her keep her clothes on more often.
I also caught vibes of LOST, Logan’s Run and Terminator. Did you notice any other references?
Will Harris be able to hold the illusion together moving forward?
Who is the TC Group?
Can Christa bring Gault back from never-never land?
What other mutations will arise in the other citizens of Ascension and will they use their powers for good or evil?
Favorite Quote:
“Must everything on this infernal planet be cocooned in plastic?”
Come on guys! Don’t leave us in suspense. Make Ascension a series already!
