SELFIE: “A Little Yelp From My Friends” {Recap}

By  |

Selfie continues to be one show that made me think it was going to be one thing and turns out to be just different enough that I’m actually charmed week after week. It’s funny to see a show where the two leads are meant to have a relationship that implies some level of power different (in the sense that Henry’s got his ideas of how to help Eliza already figured out and knows what he wants to do for her) and yet they both end up helping each other week after week.

This week’s lesson is on inter-personal skills – in the office and out – because one of the other employees thinks poorly of Eliza. (Let’s all have our shocked faces on and then put them away – we all know Eliza’s too shallow and self-absorbed to actually fit in with the rest of the company’s employees.) Henry wants Eliza, then, to work on becoming friends with the woman who thinks so poorly of her, but as only Eliza can do.

Joan – the woman who dislikes Eliza so much – has no social media presence, except for Yelp! reviews. Boy, there are plenty of Yelp! reviews. One very careful Yelp! stalking session later, Eliza shows up at Joan’s dance class and then they start to bond over everything and anything Joan’s said in a few Yelp! reviews. Only once Eliza’s at Joan’s house, eating white pizza with she and her husband does the truth about how Eliza only Yelp! stalked come out, leaving Eliza without much dinner and no closer to being Joan’s friend.

Meanwhile, Henry’s having a problem with his office friend, Larry. Larry’s having a rough patch with his wife and comes to stay with Henry, which only turns into chaos for Henry when Larry wants a flashmob to show his wife how much he cares. (Just say not to flashmobs, Larry. Just say no!) Henry hadn’t done any sort of stalking about Larry before and only finds out about the poor reaction to Larry’s previous flashmobs when Charmonique can tell he’s wearing break-away suits.

In a true moment of honesty when Eliza retells her bad night does Henry say that he’s not happy with how last night with Larry went, just as Larry’s by Henry’s office door. Without worrying about anyone else, Eliza and Henry share their lunch today, forgetting everyone else.

So in the end, it turns out that Eliza’s social media savvy can be useful for Henry (in small doses) and Henry’s suggestions for how Eliza make friends can only go so far. Neither of them are perfectly adept at being good around other people, except themselves. Will this mean that the tension between them will stay that way? Will they realize that they don’t need
