August TV Calendar
The following list provides the dates of the returning cable and major network dramas as well as new cable and major network dramas, made-for-TV movies and mini-series that will air during August:
August 1 – The final season of The Killing will premiere on Netflix (all 6 episodes)
August 2 – The new season of Hell on Wheels will return to AMC at 9 PM
NOTE: The first 10 episodes (of this 13-episode season) will air through October 4. The final three episodes will air starting on November 8.
August 5 – The new legal thriller Sequestered will debut on Crackle with six episodes premiering
Show Synopsis: Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) stars as a juror forced to choose between her beliefs and the safety of her family. Co-stars include Jesse Bradford (Bring It On) as an attorney who discovers a big conspiracy as he defends a man accused of murdering the 8-year-old son of a state governor.
NOTE: Another six episodes will premiere on October 14.
August 7 – The season finale of Rectify will air on Sundance at 9 PM
August 8 – The new Cinemax period drama The Knick will debut at 10 PM
Show Synopsis: The series centers on the Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff, who push the bounds of medicine in a time (New York in 1900) of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics. The cast includes Clive Owen, Andre Holland (Friends with Benefits), Jeremy Bobb (Hostages) and Eric Johnson (Smallville and Rookie Blue).
August 9 – The new Starz drama Outlander will debut at 9 PM
Show Synopsis: Based on the book by Diana Gabaldon, the series will follow the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
NOTE: The first eight (8) episodes of the 16-episode debut season will air consecutively from Saturday August 9 through Saturday, September 27. Then the show will go on winter hiatus, with the remaining eight episodes set to air on the cabler in early 2015.
August 9 – The Hallmark Channel movie Stranded in Paradise will debut at 9 PM
MOVIE SYNOPSIS: Tess Nelson (Vanessa Marcil from General Hospital) is a poised and confident human resources executive who is aiming for a well-deserved promotion. But when her boss informs her she’s being laid off instead, Tess is furious and worried about letting down her demanding mother, Mona (Cindy Pickett). Determined to use a business trip to an HR convention in Puerto Rico to score a new job, she is discouraged when the trip is a disaster from the start, and an approaching hurricane makes it impossible to fly home. But after bumping into a handsome fellow traveler, Carter (James Denton from Desperate Housewives), Tess opens up to the possibilities beyond her desk job, and the couple’s adventures on the island bring them closer while the hurricane rolls in.
August 11 – Major Crimes and Murder In the First will air their season finales on TNT at 9 and 10 PM respectively
August 13 – The new TNT drama Legends will debut at 9 PM
Show Synopsis: Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) stars as a deep-undercover FBI agent who may be losing his grip on reality. The cast includes Ali Larter (Heroes), Tina Majorino (Veronica Mars) and Morris Chestnut (V).
August 16 – The Hallmark Movie Channel original movie Wedding Planner Mystery will debut at 9 PM
MOVIE SYNOPSIS: Wedding planner Carnegie Kincaid has just landed the job that could propel her small business into the limelight – Nicky Parry’s marriage to a concert pianist promises to be the season’s biggest high society wedding, but when someone dies in a suspicious car crash and the bride is kidnapped, the impending nuptials turn into a nightmare. Relying upon her sharp intuition, humor and active imagination, Carnegie attempts to root out the culprit. The cast includes Erica Durance (Saving Hope and Smallville), Andrew Walker (Against the Wall), Brandon Beemer (The Bold and Beautiful and Days of Our Lives) and Chelan Simmons (Kyle XY and The LA Complex).
August 16 – Doctor Who Special “Doctor Who: The Ultimate Companion” will air on BBC America (check local listings for airtime)
August 18 – Doctor Who Special “Doctor Who: Ultimate Time Lord” will air on BBC America (check local listings for airtime)
August 18 – Dallas will be back with the remainder of its third season on TNT at 9 PM
August 19 – The second season of the Ovation series A Young Doctor’s Notebook & Other Stories will air at 10 PM
NOTE: The other three-parts of this series will air consecutively on Tuesdays: August 26, September 2 and September 9.
August 20 – The season premiere of Franklin & Bash will air at 10 PM on TNT
August 23 – The Intruders will debut on BBC America at 10 PM
Show Synopsis: The series is about a secret society devoted to chasing immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others, focusing on Jack Whelan (John Simm from Doctor Who), a former LAPD cop with a troubled and violent history, who finds the quiet idyllic life he has crafted with his wife, Amy (Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino) shattered when she goes missing. While Jack is consumed with an investigation, which threatens his very core, a sinister agent named Richard Shepherd (James Frain from True Blood) is embarking on a series of lethal executions. Meanwhile, a distraught little girl named Madison (Millie Brown from Once Upon a Time in Wonderland) runs away from home into a world of danger.
August 23 – The Doctor Who: Live Pre-Show, hosted by The Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick, will air at 7:30 PM on BBC America followed by at 8 PM by the return of Doctor Who with Peter Capaldi taking over the lead role and then the Doctor Who: After Who Live special at 11 PM
August 24 – There will be a marathon of fan favorite episodes of Doctor Who airing on BBC America (check local listings for airtimes)
August 24 – The PBS Masterpiece mini-series Breathless will debut at 9 PM with a 90-minute airing
Mini-Series Synopsis: Jack Davenport (Smash and Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) will star as a brilliant surgeon who believes he can make a difference in women’s lives. The mini-series is set in 1961 London and co-stars Ian Glen (Game of Thrones), Joanna Page (Love Actually), Zoe Boyle (Downton Abbey) and Shaun Dingwall (The Young Victoria).
NOTE: This mini-series will air every Sunday night through September 7.
August 25 – The Emmy Awards will air on NBC at 8 PM
