Closing Out the 2013-2014 TV Season

By  |

Last week was the official end of the 2013-2014 TV season for the major networks and with that closure came the typical overkill of season (or series, where applicable) finales. And the end of the season also brings out the lists of how all of the network shows performed over the TV year. With that thought in mind, it’s time to look at just how well (or not) the major networks performed from September 2013 through May 2014.

First of all, NBC actually became the most-watched network – at least in terms of the desirable 18 to 49 year old viewers – for the first time in 10 years, beating out last year’s winner CBS. NBC averaged a rating of 2.7, which is a 13% increase over last year. FOX came in second place within that demographic only with a 2.5 rating, which is actually even with their percentage rate from last season. CBS followed in third with a 2.4 rating, a drop of 17 percent and ABC coming in fourth place with a 2.1 rating, which is down 5 percent. The CW, as usual, came in last with only a 0.8 rating, but that is a 14 percent increase.

In terms of overall viewers, though, [which are the only numbers for which I personally judge each TV season on] CBS is, of course, still the most-watched network, earning an average of 10.73 million viewers. That is an adequate average, but is a drop for the network of 9 percent. NBC, surprisingly, ended up in second place with an average of 9.28 million viewers, which is a 33% increase. Third place goes to ABC, which was down by 3%, but earned an average of 7.59 million viewers. Fourth and fifth place went to FOX and The CW respectively with the former seeing an increase of 4% and an average of 7.35 million viewers while the latter earned an average of 1.91 million viewers and a 5% increase.

All of those numbers are great for the networks, but what the viewers’ want to know most are how their favorite programs performed. Thanks to the folks over at Deadline, here is the rundown of the entire 2013-2014 TV season:
