MODERN FAMILY RECAP: AUSTRALIA

The whole family takes a trip down under so Phil could see where he was conceived. His mother left him a list of things the family should do while they were there like visit the Great Barrier Reef, see the bush, and climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge (which no one wanted to do).

Cam and Mitch went to meet an old friend Fergus (guest star Rhys Darby) for lunch. Cam described him as “always on” and he was no different at lunch. Cam and Mitch were embarrassed because he was very animated telling a story about a waitress and people were staring. They were just about to try and leave when a lady asked Fergus for a picture because she was a big fan. It turns out Fergus had his own talk show in Australia and is kind of a big deal (and that is why everyone was staring). Suddenly Cam and Mitch had more time to hang with him. They rode in his limo, went to the zoo, and walked right in to a swanky nightclub. Sweet!

Luke and Manny broke away from the family so they could check out a nude beach (mainly to see boobs). Luke spotted a topless woman and jumped into the ocean not thinking about how deep the water was. A large wave hit him and washed his swimming trunks away. He yelled for Manny to help him, but Manny said he didn’t have his nose plugs (I literally laughed out loud during this scene. Luke and Manny are becoming funny, teenagers and their relationship is great). Luckily the nice topless woman offered to find them for him.

Jay and Claire didn’t know how to leave their jobs at home and kept looking for ways to sneak off and work on a getting a new account for their closet company. Gloria and Phil were not happy about it so they hung out together. Phil had some pretty bad luck while he was in Australia. He had an allergic reaction to veggiemite, he got bit by a jellyfish, and punched in the face by a baby Kangaroo. Hilarious! Gloria was there to help him since Claire was busy working with her Dad. Bad Claire.

Cam and Mitch were invited to hang out on Hugh Jackman’s Yacht with Fergus so they ditched the family again. When they arrived, Fergus had just gotten into a fight with Hugh and they missed the yacht. This was the beginning of bad luck for them (which Mitch thought was karma for ditching the family to hang out with a celebrity). Fergus rented a small boat for the three of them (which was not luxurious at all), then their cab broke down and they were approached by a motor cycle gang. They were nervous but the motorcycle guys were nice and gave them a ride to meet the family.

Lily was happy to see her Daddies (after spending the afternoon searching for the perfect souvenir with Alex and Haley). Haley found a hot guy for her souvenir (are we really surprised?), and Alex documented her every move for her college application.

Gloria found Jay and Claire secretly working in a tent and she had enough. She told Jay he was missing the whole vacation and she missed him. She told Claire that her husband was injured and she missed the whole thing. Claire felt bad when she saw Phil’s black eye, but it only lasted until she saw a dog run off with her laptop. She ran off the catch the dog.

Jay decided to let the work stuff go and enjoy family time. He encouraged Claire to do the same. She resisted at first but agreed to have some fun.

There was a montage of the family climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, riding in a helicopter and swimming underwater. A beautiful view of Australia and it definitely made you want to take a trip! They had a memorable vacation Modern Family style and it was another great episode!
