THE GOOD WIFE – 5.14 ‘A Few Words’ Elsbeth Strikes Again!
Alicia is pacing. Cary is reading, and Clarke Hayden is having technological difficulty. They are in NYC at an American Bar Association convention where Alicia is to deliver the keynote address. The news isn’t good and her speech needs reworking. The cherry on top comes when their new prospective client Rayna Hecht (Jill Hennessy) blows them off.
Alicia sits down to rewrite her speech knowing that everyone at her firm is depending on her to deliver. During this exercise we are treated to flashbacks of Ms. Forrick ‘s reentry into the workforce after a thirteen year absence. These flashbacks arrive in a series of vignettes from several different perspectives. My favorites were Will and Alicia’s elevator encounter and Mama Florrick’s role as Alicia’s guilt. No one slithers better than Jackie. Honorable Mention goes to Will’s for his encouragement to Alicia while everyone else treated like the plauge. “We’ve all got a past that can hurt us. Don’t let yours hurt you.” That made my heart smile while encouraging me that Alicia and Will could once again find common ground.
Nelson Dubeck is circling Will like a hungry shark. I’m worried that Will is gonna need more than earplugs to fight him off. Diane knows something is up and gets the skinny on goings on. Meanwhile Elsbeth Tascioni ( Carrie Preston) steps up to the podium which gives Diane a front row seat to Will going all starry eyed. You know what? i would almost love to see Will in a relationship with Elsbeth, who is head and shoulders above the blond rubberband! Go Elsbeth! And may I also add that Elsbeth is my absolute favorite guest star on this series. Her red hair and southern charm is like a big ray of sunshine you want to get trapped by.
Will enlists Elsbeth’s help with the Nelson Dubeck problem and in true Elsbeth style she delivers in such a way that is both mystifying and brilliant. Seeing the stupefied look on Neson’s face was priceless!
Things wrap up with Alicia commiserating over beer and a burger when large portion of the audience flees her speech due to an unexpected development. Will gets seated beside her and the two begin an uneasy conversation which ends in some small form of a truce. I feel so much better with this tiny ray of hope between the two.
All of Esbeth’s hard work is undone when Will is seen on video again this time with Jim Moody who is also being pressured to testify. Elsbeth will have her hands full in untangling this mess. They have 48-hours to answer. Next week is going to be amazing.
Observations:
- I am so happy that there was SO MUCH of Carrie Preston (Elsbeth) in this episode. Highlighting her quirky and endearing behavior was brilliant. The Anti-Semitic Costumed furry bear was hilarious, however her awful karaoke was equally entertaining.
- Once again, no one does flashbacks better than The Good Wife. You just cannot get enough.
