Unicorn Onesies & More! Charlie McDermott and Eden Sher Talk ‘THE MIDDLE’
NiceGirlsTV.com had the opportunity to chat with The Middle’s Charlie McDermott and Eden Sher during a recent conference call to announce the series arrival to The Hallmark Channel, March 3 8-10 eastern. The two spoke about their experiences on the series and it is obvious they both love working together and the show itself. The pair were lively and energetic in their adoration of all things related to their characters and fellow cast members.
When asked about the favorite aspect of her character Sue , Eden replied: “I’ll just go and jump in real quick, mine is getting the professional opportunity to get paid to just fall on my butt multiple times a day, and squeal, and steal unicorn onesies from Sue’s wardrobe.” Regarding Axl, Charlie along with some help from Eden decided his mannerisms were a favorite. Charlie agreed that the groan is his specialty. ” Yes, the obnoxious groan is definitely my favorite. I guess because this year, I think I just started to realize I’ve been doing this rolling growl thing in one scene. That’s been my favorite thing lately. I don’t know where that came from, but I’ve been enjoying doing that to the point where they kind of tell me to stop. I’ve been doing it too much.” Eden Sher added: “God, your glares are so funny. Just funny little ticks, like…the groans.” and “Unicorn onesies and groans, that’s what you get from the cast of The Middle.”
The two also agreed that the show is easy to watch at any point and new fans will have no trouble following ‘The Middle’ whenever they view. The brother-sister relationship is something that is easy to relate to, and their trials resonate with viewers. Eden Sher says the show is on some level following actual life.
‘The Middle’ is also known for it’s fantastic guest stars. Charlie McDermott said: “For me it was Norm McDonald. I was a huge fan of Norm McDonald. Yes, when he came on. I was also a huge fan of Chris Kattan, both of them from SNL. But I worked with Chris Kattan during the pilot. So I got my star struckedness out of the way pretty early. But yes, when Norm McDonald came on, I was pretty star struck. Eden Sher said her’s had to be Whoopi Goldberg and she had a very emotional reaction. “I feel like I was — I don’t know why, I was not — maybe I was star struck on an unconscious level with Whoopi Goldberg because I threw up, but I don’t remember feeling. It was like the actual like physical, oh my God, my body is struck. It doesn’t know what to do. Just blech, going to release everything in my body.”
When asked about whether either of them ever felt pigeon-holed by the popularity of their characters Charlie said “Eden and I are very fortunate in the fact that we don’t necessarily look that much like our characters outside of filming, especially Eden. ..we also started the show post-childhood, which helps too.” Eden Sher felt it was not an issue. ” Yes, I think Charlie and I are lucky… but I’m pretty confident in that we’re pretty talented human beings who will be able to convince others that we can play other people.”
They both agreed their favorite episode was when Sue and Axl were required to collaborate on a school project. Charlie commented;”I remember when I read that I just got so excited when I read it and then it’s one of the ones I actually sat down because I wanted to see it and when I watched it, I was like, oh, that was awesome. I love that.” Charlie said it was an honor working with his fellow cast members “The cheesy and true answer, a privilege. Not everyone gets their first big sort of ongoing acting experience to be with such welcoming and kind… people.”
As to the future plans for their characters: Charlie says he would like Axl to be drafted in the military. Eden shared that she would like for Sue to get her braces off eventually. The two joke about their ideas, however Sher freely admits “I actually have no idea if that’s going to be a reality or not.”
‘The Middle’ begins it’s syndication on The Hallmark Channel, March 3 from 8-10 pm eastern and returns to ABC on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 8/7c.
