Web Series Spotlight: Caper

Back on April 2, 2012, actress Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer) along with Kim Evey and Sheri Bryant launched the YouTube Channel Geek & Sundry, as part of YouTube’s 100 million dollar original channel initiative.

Geek & Sundry originally started out with three unscripted programs: “The Flog”, “Sword & Laser” and “Tabletop”. Since that time, the YouTube Channel has gained over a dozen online series; and their latest production “Caper” launched its first two episodes on February 12 with new episodes to air every Wednesday.

Caper is a new comedy superhero series developed by Amy Berg (writer and producer on TV shows like Leverage, Person of Interest and Eureka) and Mike Sizemore that follows a team of superheroes who are forced to start pulling heists and capers just to make rent on their apartment.

Abby Miller (Justified) is Penny Blue, an MIT graduate who was at the top of her class, who had dozens of grants in engineering and robotics.  She worked for Sam Clarke, in this universe a Tony Stark-like millionaire who is believed to be “The Machine” (think Iron Man-like), but that title and suit is actually Penny’s because she “built the damn thing” but he took all the credit. She took her invention back (well some would say she stole it) and left his employ only to be rejected by every other company because of him.

Her roommates – in a run-down apartment that isn’t really an apartment – are Alexia (Beth Riesgraf from Leverage and Criminal Minds), Dagr (Hartley Sawyer from the short-lived TBS dramedy Glory Daze) and Luke (Harry Shum, Jr. from Glee).

Where Abby is 100 percent human, her roommates are not. They are the real deal: superheroes with special abilities:

Luke Washington aka The Trooper (think the all-American boy scout or Captain America times a million) was, until a year ago, a journalist but now he’s a blogger [and that doesn’t pay much at all, as all bloggers know]. He grew up in Dogbone, Nebraska with his mom and sheriff dad, but when his dad was killed, Luke’s mom told him the truth. His dad was from “way out of town”. As the story goes, Starman got Luke’s mom pregnant and then left town. Thanks to his father, Luke never gets sick, he is incredible strong and he can fly.

Dagr is the 12th son of the 12th son from an alternate universe (think Thor without the long-flowing hair and hammer), who was sent to Earth on a mission by his father, but he still hasn’t found what he was sent to retrieve. He is “man-candy” to any woman with $50 and is the biggest breadwinner among the group.

And, Alexia is an Amazon, who rejected her bloodline when she 13 years old, joining the Assassin’s Guild, but the killing by the guild didn’t give her the glory she hoped for so she decided to become one of the good guys. But, it’s not a good idea to piss her off because she can bench press a pyramid. She works as personal trainer to rich guys, the only job she could find. (Keep an eye out for her client in the first episode as Leverage fans will recognize a familiar face: Aldis Hodge).

Special guest appearances have been made by Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap and Star Trek: Enterprise) as Penny’s dad and Joel Gretsch (The 4400 and V) as Sam Clarke. While the writers have been secretive about other planned guest stars there are to be more surprises as the episodes roll out each week.

Berg and Sizemore are not only the writers of Caper they serve as executive producers alongside Day and Bryant with Donald Murphy, who has worked with the Coen Brothers and Oliver Stone, as the director.
