What to Expect on TV in March

By  |

While we are only a few days into February, it doesn’t hurt to take an advanced look at what TV viewers can expect to see on the major and cable networks next month between new dramas debuting, current dramas returning with new episodes and a made-for-TV movie that are worth marking on your calendar so you don’t miss them.

Here is the list of the programs I am most looking forward to in March:

While an official airdate has yet to be announced, the folks over at Lifetime are expected to air a two-hour reunion special for the network’s long-running, and recently defunct, drama Army Wives. As a fan of the show since the first episode, I look forward to seeing who will return for the reunion and what stories those cast members will have to tell.

Suits

On March 6, the USA Network legal drama Suits will finally be back with its mid-season premiere and we will find out just what Louis Litt does with the knowledge he gained on Mike in the winter finale. What do you think will happen?

There will be a new Hallmark Channel movie airing on March 8 called A Ring By Spring, starring Witches of East End actress Rachel Boston as business consultant Caryn Briggs who has let a string of steady boyfriends get away. But when she playfully agrees to have her fortune read at a charity booth, she is told that she’ll have an engagement ring by spring or she’ll never marry. In true Hallmark Channel style, this movie will assuredly have crazy antics leading up to Caryn finding “the right guy”. I may jest, but I really enjoy the Hallmark Channel movies and I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one like all the rest.

Resurrection

Over on ABC a few days later (March 9 to be exact), it will be a big night of programming with the long-awaited return of Once Upon a Time and Revenge to Sunday nights; and this time around there will be no breaks in the season from here on out (at least that is the stance that the network has been taking so we’ll see if they stick to that programming plan). Slapped right in between both of these returning shows will be the new drama Resurrection that focuses on the lives of some very fortunate people whose lost loved ones (i.e., those who have passed away) inexplicable come back to them from the great beyond.

NOTE: The French show The Returned that aired last fall on the Sundance Channel is nearly the mirror image of this show despite the network (ABC, that is) stating Resurrection is not the Americanized version of that series. Rather it is based on a book called The Returned that is not the basis of the French series. Crazy I know, but…

The CW series Beauty And the Beast, which has been struggling badly in the ratings all season, will air its final episode on March 10 and then will go on another hiatus. The show is expected to return with its final episodes of its current season, possibly sometime in late May.

When NBC announced they would be debuting a new J.J. Abrams drama at some point in the mid-season, I have to admit I was very excited, as I’ve been a fan of his work for a very long time – well before Lost came on the air, I might add. And while the premise of this new show – called Believe – should make me anticipatory, I’m not sure yet. But on March 10, I will check out Believe and judge for myself. The show has a rather convoluted premise, but here goes: A 10-year-old girl named Bo has special gifts and an unusual team breaks out a wrongfully accused death row inmate to act as her protector all the while crazed assassins are out to get Bo.

Crisis

A few nights later (March 16) over on NBC, another new drama will debut. This one is called Crisis and will probably fit the mold of The Blacklist combined with the box office film Taken to a certain extent. Here is the general premise: When the students at Ballard High head out for a field trip, they are ambushed on a secluded rural road where they and their chaperones are taken hostage. Why are they important? They are the children of some of the most powerful people in the world. We’ll have to see if the American audience will tune in or make this new drama a casualty much like what happened to Hostages over on CBS.

Fans of what has become known as “Amell Wednesdays” will see those keywords disappear on social media starting on March 17 when The CW series The Tomorrow People moves from its Wednesday night timeslot (where it follows Arrow) to its new night – Mondays.

NOTE: Cousins Robbie and Stephen Amell are the lead stars in The Tomorrow People and Arrow respectively.

It will be a big night for The CW on March 19 when their new drama The 100 debuts. In a nut shell, this series is based on the novel of the same name by Kass Morgan, telling the story of 4,000 human survivors who have lived in outer space for three generations due to a nuclear Armageddon on Earth. But with resources running out, 100 teenagers are forced back to the planet to determine if it is inhabitable or not.

Continuing with changes at The CW, the network’s dramedy Hart of Dixie, which has never been a ratings winner, but a fan favorite, is moving to its new night and time: Fridays at 9 PM starting on March 21.

Call the Midwife

Lastly, PBS will be back with more original programming starting on March 30 when new seasons of the acclaimed drama Call the Midwife and the Jeremy Piven-led period drama Mr. Selfridge both start their eight-week long runs.

These are not the only programming options coming to the small screen in March, but they are the ones that I’ll be looking forward to most. Do you have anything coming on TV in March for which you are anticipating? Please share.
