MODERN FAMILY RECAP: THE BIG GAME

By  |

It’s the morning of the big football game and Coach Cam is excited and superstitious. He doesn’t want to say the word “game,” he will only spell it and he taps each doorway with the football several times. Mitch thought his methods were a little crazy but Cam didn’t care because it worked. This game was important because if they won, Cam would be the most successful coach the school has had in their first year (with 3 winning games). He wanted his picture on the wall and the dome named after him (Cameron Tucker Dome has a nice ring to it)!

Phil does his best to stay positive with a slump in the realty business. He has to sell a house before the end of the day, or he would have his first month ever without selling one home. He stays positive and keeps a smile on his face.

Claire is determined to prove to the staff that she isn’t just the boss’s daughter. She doesn’t want Jay to give her special treatment (which is hard for him to do while he is drinking out of a #1 Dad mug with her picture on it).

The team arrived at the field and Coach Cam worked them hard in preparation for the game. Cam found out that the opposing team’s Coach died the night before and they are playing the game in his honor. They also hadn’t won a game all season. Manny felt bad and said maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if they let them win to boost their spirits. Coach Cam was not having that. He told them to play like a team that Coach Knight would have been proud to lose to. He was a man who loved football and competition; he would not have wanted a game handed over to his team.

12.5.13 MF LukeThe announcer was out so Luke got to be the announcer of the game and keep score. This was awesome for Luke because it gave him the opportunity to payback the kicker of the football team who constantly bullied him.

Phil went to the house he was going to show and was locked out. He saw an open window on the second floor as an opportunity to sneak in. He climbed on the roof and through the window, only to step in a fish tank. He managed to go outside and let the door lock on him again, so he went in a different window and this time stepped in an aquarium with a snake in it! Yikes! After Phil got himself together, the couple came and told Phil they were expecting a baby and they were going to wait to buy a house. No sale for Phil.

Claire was at work and went down to the warehouse to smooth things over with a staff member (she forgot to sign a shipment form which left them with over 100 boxes that couldn’t be shipped). She decided to go in one of the closets to check it out and locked herself inside. Jay called and asked if she was ready to go to the game, and she told him she was finishing some work in her office. She still didn’t want his help. What she didn’t know was that Jay could see her on the security monitor and watched her climb out of the closet and knock over a bunch of boxes in domino fashion. Hilarious!

Mitch wanted to quit his job because he got another offer, but chickened out every time he had the chance to tell his boss. His boss was sad because his girlfriend broke up with him and basically invited himself to watch the football game with Mitch.

At the game, they were down by six at halftime. Cam gave them a pep talk and they were fired up. In the last minute of the game, they called one of Phil’s plays and scored a touchdown to tie the game. It was up to Manny to kick the winning field goal (since the kicker ran off the field after Luke for making fun of him the whole game). Manny was conflicted about beating a team that was suffering a loss. Cam told him to go out there and do what felt right. Manny kicked that ball and it was good! The Dolphins – and Coach Cam- won the game! Yay!

After Mitch finally told his boss he was quitting, his boss decided to buy a house. Phil sold him a house and he paid in cash! It was a win for the whole family that day.

My favorite quote of the night- Phil: “As my favorite redhead once sang, ‘The sun will come out tomorrow.’ That redhead, of course, was Mitchell.”
