Web Series Spotlight: The Hillywood Show
The Hillywood Show is the brainchild of Las Vegas born Hilly and Hannah Hindi, talented sisters who have become an internet sensation with their parodies of box office films such as Harry Potter and Twilight as well as the TV show The Vampire Diaries (among others).
Their satire sketches actually got their start in 2006 when Hilly entered a video into the “Be a Red Star” AOL contest where, out of 250,000 entries, Hilly’s video won third place. Pretty impressive, right?
Rather than stopping there, the sisters began to create parodies, or more specifically, elaborate music videos based on what is most popular in current pop culture. Their videos are visually stunning with the sisters doing all the work on the costumes, make-up and choreography themselves. In addition, they fund the parodies themselves (with help from donors as their projects have grown), direct each video themselves using only one camera and, if that isn’t all, do all the editing themselves.
Each new parody has a great mix of comedy, “quirky performances, dead-on impersonations, musical pastiche and movie spoofs”.
They came to national attention thanks in great part to the Twilight parody films for which they created and those videos have led to millions of channel views on YouTube, making the Hindi sisters celebrities in their own right.
So far, the sisters (and their loyal group of fans, volunteers and participants) have created 16 music videos, 15 episodes, 5 specials and 16 vlog reports from their many adventures. The Hillywood Show has traveled all over the globe, attending conventions such as Vamipcon in Budapest, Hungary, Comic Con in San Diego and numerous Creation Entertainment convention across the country focused on the Twilight franchise and The Vampire Diaries TV series.
The Hillywood Show currently has over 447,000 subscribers at YouTube with millions of viewers for each of their music videos; in fact, their parody of Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 received over 20 million views to date. Their latest video parody is for this year’s box office hit Warm Bodies in which Hilly Hindi and her co-star Clayton Velasquez wear the actual screen-used costumes worn by the film’s stars Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer.
