Web Series Spotlight: Pretty Tough
The Pretty Tough web series hit computer screens last year via Hulu, starring a then unknown Australian actress named Adelaide Kane (she’s Derek’s sister on the current season of Teen Wolf and the lead in the upcoming CW period drama Reign), who had only appeared in the Aussie soap opera Neighbours and the Proctor & Gamble/Walmart made-for-TV movie Secrets of the Mountain before landing the lead role in the web series.
The Pretty Tough book series was written by TV producer Liz Tigelaar and author-sports enthusiast Keri Mikulski. TV viewers will recognize Tigelaar’s name from her work on shows like Brothers & Sisters, Life Unexpected, Once Upon a Time and Revenge (to name a few), who wrote the first two books in the series while author Mikulski rounded out the series with four additional books, writing the Ashley Clarke series as well.
The web series itself is based on the first book in the series, focusing on sisters Krista and Charlie Brown – yes, you read that correctly Charlie Brown. Older sister Krista is pretty and popular while Charlie is not. But when both girls are recruited by to their school’s soccer team, they have to not only face their difference but also the problems that have led them to being at odds with each other.
The screenplay for the web series was actually written by actress Marguerite MacIntyre, who appears as Sheriff Forbes on The Vampire Diaries. MacIntyre and Tigelaar worked together on the cult-favorite series Kyle XY, which so happened to be co-created by Julie Plec, the executive producer of The Vampire Diaries and the upcoming The Tomorrow People.
The five episodes of Pretty Tough are each approximately 22 minutes long and was produced by Tim Williams and directed by Stewart Hendler. The cast included Crystal Young, Jess Adams, Matthew Florida and Beth Behrs (the star of the CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls) [among others].
