PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: ‘A’ Is for Alive, But Someone Else Isn’t
Last night was the season 4 premiere of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars and we’ve got a new possibility for who the leader of the ‘A’ pack is. We got answers to some things and more questions about others. And we still aren’t 100% sure that Ali is alive, although there is high suspicion.
The show started off with what was in the trunk of Wilden’s car. ‘A’ shows a morbidly humorous side when it turns out to be a dead pig. While the girls all start back to the car, Mona is in the front seat breaking into Wilden’s computer. As she’s taking out the memory chip, Hannah frantically asks her what the heck she’s doing. “Saving your mom,” was the reply.
Later Mona confesses to everything she has done under the orders from ‘A’. Let’s sum up:
- Mona put Wilden’s car in Hannah’s garage but she didn’t pull it out of the lake;
- Shauna knew Jenna before she came to Rosewood;
- Shauna and Jenna are both afraid of Melissa;
- When Cece came to Radley, Mona thought she was Ali. Mona doesn’t remember what they talked about because it was before they changed her meds;
- Lucas gave Emily the massage (creepy!);
- Mona recruited Toby when he got the job in Buck’s County;
- Mona didn’t push Ian off the bell tower and she wished she knew who did.
After all this Mona takes the girls to her ‘lair’ where she reveals to them all the information she has collected about them. She is also not giving up the chip from the computer because she’s going to find out who Red Coat is. She needs to know and so do the girls.
As all five girls are on their way to Mona’s lair they pass the car with the dead pig and it’s surrounded by police. “All this for a car and a dead pig?” says Spencer. Then they see the sheet covered body on the ground. A gust of wind blows it away from the face to reveal Wilden! OMG! Who killed Wilden? Mona looks just as shocked and scared as the others.
Toby is outside the burned cabin where firefighters are still sifting through the wreckage. He’s still got the lighter in his hands and as he watches, one of the firemen picks up a singed red coat.
Meanwhile the girls are looking through all the stuff Mona has in her trailer. They come upon the mask from the Halloween train. Mona tells them that she wasn’t the one who put Aria in the box and tried to kill her. She proves it by showing them footage on her laptop from that night. One of the Queen of Hearts is Wilden and the other is Melissa! Just as the second QoH is removing her mask proving it’s Melissa, the laptop goes berzerk. Someone has tapped into it and begins deleting all of Mona’s files.
Just then the girls hear little kids outside calling for Alison to come out and play. The girls go outside to a playground where five little girls are playing, each one of them having characteristics of the girls and each one of them carrying dolls that look like the liars. The dolls all have the liars’ names. The little girl tells them that Alison gave them to the kids as a present, and that Alison started playing with them right after Mona moved into the trailer park.
Hannah and Emily are in Em’s bedroom when Emily’s mom comes home carrying a basket for Mrs. DiLaurentis. She tells the girls that Jessica is moving back into her house which amazes the girls because Jason has told them that she hated it there. Too many memories of Alison. Hannah says that maybe she’s not so sad anymore if she knows that the girls know – that Alison is really alive. Hannah insists it was Alison who pulled them all out of the fire.
Toby and Spencer are in the burned out cabin to look for the red coat but they are not alone. A mysterious ‘someone’ is lurking and when Toby starts to go after this person, they run off into the woods. And of course the red coat is gone.
Emily visits Mrs. D and all of Ali’s things are in boxed all over the front yard. Jessica asks Em to help bring some of the boxes in and she leads her to what looks like Ali’s old room. Later Emily calls Hannah and tells her that Mrs. D is building a shrine to Alison, and perhaps when you miss someone so badly, you believe that you see her and that she is still alive.
Hannah is helping Mona move the trailer to a new location and the two have a moment recalling old times together. You begin to feel bad for Mona at this point but like the girls, she has a long way to go before we can truly trust her. She did a lot of really bad things.
Aria bumps into Ezra in the coffee shop and he tells her that he’s been offered a job at Rosewood High. Oh joy.
Spencer is reading the newspaper about Wilden. She reads that he was shot multiple times at a different location than where they found his body. Time of death was between 10PM and midnight when they were all at the lodge. She’s with Toby who is another one that I will never trust. I’ll trust Mona before I trust Toby. For one thing, he only let’s Spencer have one more cup of coffee. Sorry but I would knock him down and step on his body to get to that coffee, thank you very much.
He gets a call on his cell and it’s ‘A’ showing him a photo of his mother. “Bet you miss her every day. Kisses – A”. And now we know that Toby is still under ‘A’s control. I’m sure we’ll find out more about all that story later this season. By the way, he lies to Spencer about the call.
Hannah makes a shopping date with Mona while Aria is called to the principal’s office. When he calls her in he tells her that he knows that she is sleeping with Ezra and now he has proof. He shows her photos of them together and then tells her that he has had Ezra arrested because she is still a minor. She runs down to Fitz’s classroom just as the cops are walking him out in handcuffs.
Oh whew! It was only a daydream Aria was having. Principal actually has some papers he wants her to give to her mom, nothing more. There’s a moment that disappointed me. As Aria leaves the office she sends a text to Ezra telling him that she is moving on with other people.
Paige talks Emily into planning to move out west with her to go to Stanford. She wants to break out from under Rosewood and A’s shadow. Emily tells her yes!
As the liars attend Wilden’s funeral their purpose is to find the casket and see if they can discover what ‘A’ has on them that could potentially be revealed to all of Rosewood. A mysterious woman in black, wearing a black veil, is among the guests and Spencer sees her. Pay attention kids because she is very important.
Spencer finds the casket and Mona is there, brought there by the same message Spencer got. A phone starts to ring and they look around Wilden’s body to find it. Three numbers appear in the phones history: two blocked calls and one from “Kisses”. Spencer dials that number and who answers but Hannah. She says, “Why are you calling me on my mom’s phone?” WHAT!
As the girls wonder is A’s next target is Hannah’s mom, Mrs. D walks up to them and tells them all how beautiful they look. Right about now I’m getting very suspicious of Mrs. D. What is her deal? What if she’s behind everything? What if she’s the one calling the shots? She seems unhinged enough about her daughter that it would certainly fit. And it would explain why only the four girls were the targets from the pilot episode.
While all this is going on Toby is driving Mona’s lair somewhere per instructions from ‘A’. “I know what happened 2 ur mom. Bring the lair and u will 2.” Then we get a flashback to a time when Ali was with Toby in his house and his mother walks in. It’s 4 in the afternoon and she has just woken up. She seems confused. Ali thinks she’s lazy and tells Toby so. He tells her to leave and she does, calling him a loser on the way out. Ah, there’s the Ali we all know and hate. Toby abandons the RV on an empty road.
Back at the church the woman in black gets into a limo and it drives off as the girls wonder who the heck she is. Then a young man walks up to them and introduces himself as Officer Holbrook, from Pennsylvania State Police. He’s investigating the murder of Wilden and
Garret Reynolds. He tells the girls that he has seen Wilden’s files and he thinks the guy had some obsessive issues with the four girls. He tells them that Wilden’s conduct bordered on unprofessional at best. Spencer tells him that he harassed them a lot and while Holbrook agreed with them, he also asks them why they would come to his funeral. He then tells them that they will probably bring them all in for questioning but to remember that he’s one of the good guys. He’s just there to find out the truth. Could Holbrook be the one who finally digs into the truth about what been happening with A and the girls?
And then the phones ring. “Truth won’t set you free bitches. I’m gonna bury you with it. Kisses – A”. Attached is the video of the night the girls found Wilden’s car and opened the trunk. She recorded the whole thing, including Mona taking the chip out of the computer.
Closing scene has the woman in black dressing one of the dolls in Mona’s lair (I think). She’s in front of the mirror which is covered with pictures of Ali. She takes off her veil and she’s wearing a mask – one side is disfigured.
So who is she? What do you guys think? Speculate in the comments below, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
