Advanced Review: Continuum Season 2: “Second Chances”

By  |

On Friday, June 7 the second season of Continuum will premiere on Syfy at 10 PM, taking over the timeslot from the recently completed long-running series Merlin.

As a refresher, Continuum revolves around Kiera Cameron (series lead Rachel Nichols from Criminal Minds and Alias) a CPS “protector” (known as a police officer) from the year 2077 who was transported back to 2012 with a group of terrorist known as Liber8 who were scheduled for execution, before their time jump.

Kiera must stop the terrorist from changing the past, so she disguises herself as a special agent, teams up with local Vancouver police detective Carlos Fonnegra (series lead Victor Webster from Mutant X and Castle) and local teen computer genius Alec Sadler (series regular Erik Knudsen from Jericho) to stop them.

During her time in 2012 she forms an unlikely alliance with former Liber8 member Matthew Kellog (recurring guest star Stephen Lobo), who has his own ulterior motives in play.

As the show returns after the events of the debut season finale, Kiera is reeling from the suicide bomb that Liber8 leader Edouard Kagame (recurring guest star Tony Amendola) detonated in one of the office buildings in downtown Vancouver and dealing with CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) Agent Gardiner (recurring guest star Nicholas Lea from The X-Files and Kyle XY) who is in Vancouver to obviously handle more than just the problem with Liber8. Alec, on the other hand, has seen his entire life crumble around him as his step-brother is arrested and his step-father killed as well as getting a disconcerting message from his future self.

Without giving too much away, the second season premiere episode finds Kiera working on the edge of the law, with help from her colleagues at the Vancouver police department, all the while keeping their hands clean so her actions won’t blow back on them. Things with Alec aren’t much better as he has moved away from the farm where his step-father was killed, moving in with some friends and isn’t taking Kiera’s calls.

Eventually, though, Kiera is able to get back in touch with Alec while she helps Carlos look into the assassination of Vancouver’s mayor; but when her investigation leads to the capture of a gang member that could actually jeopardize the case because of her non-affiliation with the law things become even more complicated.

And, it shouldn’t be any surprise that Liber8 and politician Jim Martin (guest star Tahmoh Penikett from Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse) are involved in the mayor’s assassination; but I will leave the explanation behind that reveal for those who plan on watching the show (which you really should).

The season premiere episode entitled “Second Chances” was written by Simon Barry and directed by Pat Williams. New episodes of Continuum will air every Friday night at 10 PM on Syfy.
