Women Behind the Scenes Spotlight: Heather Mitchell

Heather Mitchell

Today’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is focused on TV writer and producer Heather Mitchell.

Heather is a New York native, who got her start as a journalist, editing newspaper columns and comic strips including Dilbert and Peanuts for United Feature Syndicate. She graduated with a degree in American Studies thanks to a “borderline unhealthy obsession with China Beach, which made her into a “life-long U.S. history-and-culture buff.

She eventually moved west to “make things up for a living”, and has written children’s books, animation series, English-language telenovelas and reality shows ranging from the Style Network’s Diary of an Affair to the Food Network’s Ace of Cakes.

During the mid 2000’s, Heather was a writer on the TV series Bratz and Growing Up Creepie and then worked as a writer and producer on the TV series Desire and My First Home. Around that time she was also an associate producer on the made-for-TV movie My RV Life.

In 2008, she took part in the Warner Bros. Writer’s Workshop, which led to a staff writer position on the short-lived series Eleventh Hour. She then moved over to the writer’s room, working as a story editor and writer, for the long-running CBS series Medium. That work eventually led her to a position as a writer on another short-lived TV series The Chicago Code in 2011.

She hit real pay dirt, though, last season as a writer and co-producer on Grey’s Anatomy and has most recently been working as a co-producer and writer for the hot ABC series Scandal.
