Who Is Your Favorite TV Sidekick?

By  |

Since the early days of television, there has always been the faithful sidekick. Lucy had Ethel on I Love Lucy, Batman had Robin on the classic TV series Batman, the Skipper had Gilligan on Gilligan’s Island and Buffy had Xander and Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The faithful sidekick, over the decades, has also been seen in different ways by the viewers based on the time period, but one thing has always remained the same: the sidekick has always been dedicated to their partner, best friend, sibling, co-worker, or the complete stranger who quickly became a trusted confidante.

In more recent years, there were other memorable TV sidekicks such as Morgan to Chuck on Chuck, Chloe Sullivan to Clark Kent on Smallville, Hugo to Jack on Lost, Gwen to Captain Jack on Torchwood, and Chloe O’Brien to Jack on 24.

And now, let’s add a few more great TV sidekicks currently lending our heroes a hand:

JT

J.T. Forbes to Vincent Keller on Beauty And the Beast

J.T. (as played by Austin Basis, formerly of Life Unexpected and Ghostfacers) has been best friends with Vincent Keller (series lead Jay Ryan) since they were kids. After his buddy Vincent returns altered from his time in the military, J.T. spends the next ten years helping his best friend to hide from those who pursue him. Needless to say, that is true dedication to a friend, making him a great sidekick for the man who is also an unwilling beast.

Kenzi

Kenzi to Bo on Lost Girl

This street-wise tough girl with a heart of gold (as portrayed by Ksenia Solo from Life Unexpected and Black Swan) is rescued by beautiful succubus Bo (series lead Anna Silk) after a run-in with a leech, who wanted nothing more than to kill poor Kenzi; making the street-wise run-away Bo’s best friend forever. In a very quick span of time, Kenzi and Bo became inseparable and more like sisters than just friends.

Monroe to Nick Burkhardt on Grimm

This humble clock repairman, who also happens to be a Blutbad (aka your “friendly” neighborhood werewolf) – as played by Silas Weir Mitchell from Prison Break – has become an invaluable asset to Detective Nick Burkhardt (series lead David Giuntoli) in his role as the Grimm, one of the few remaining hunters of the things that go bump in the night straight out of fairytales. Thanks to Monroe, Nick has a strong defender on his side and a knowledgeable assistant in all things Wesen.

Clara Oswald to The Doctor on Doctor Who

Clara (portrayed by Jenna-Louise Coleman, from Captain America: The First Avenger) is that unique individual with the enviable position – she is the latest companion of the one and only Doctor (series lead Matt Smith). But there is one very special quality about Clara; she is the girl who just keeps on going (much like the energizer bunny; well maybe not exactly, but she keeps cropping up throughout time; and the Doctor is more than a little intrigued about her origins. And, in turn, Clara is quickly becoming an indispensable attribute to the Doctor in his travels.

Felicity

Felicity Smoak to Oliver Queen on Arrow

Felicity Smoak (played by relative newcomer Emily Bett Rickards) may be the “go-to” IT girl at Queen Consolidated; and that is certainly how she was first “used” by Oliver Queen (aka The Hood aka Arrow [series lead Stephen Amell]), but she has quickly became an important part of his team even if she was inadvertently included in Oliver’s secret identity when he was hurt. In a very short amount of time, she has become the voice of reason for a man with a very dark agenda.

Obviously, there are many other great or interesting sidekicks who have graced our TV screens over the decades. Think it over and please let us know who is your favorite TV sidekick.
