SCANDAL Recap: Molly, You In Danger Girl!
Tonight’s episode is titled, “Molly, You in Danger Girl!” which is amusing since Whoopi said that to Demi in Ghost where Tony Goldwyn was the bad guy. Yay for fun references, it’s also pretty relevant considering tonight’s episode.
The Mole: I’m just going to say it…Osborne wasn’t the mole. I’m not sure if there was a story I cared less about. I mean it turns out it is the beginning of a much bigger story – obviously – but I am having a hard time caring that Osborne was framed and murdered. The case of the week is proving that Osborne wasn’t the mole and the team does this when Osborne’s widow stops by their office. The gladiators can’t believe when Olivia takes the case. They dig back into the Albatross files, even though Harrison thinks this is a waste of time. The medical examiner says it was consistent with suicide, but Huck thinks it was too perfect.
Olivia questions the head of Osborne’s security detail. After some fast talking Olivia gets him to admit that while Osborne was a patriot through and through he had a gambling problem. That shady dry cleaner was his bookie. Harrison is still quite skeptical.
Next they try questioning Molly, Wendy’s roommate and BFF, the one that pointed out Osborne as the guy who threatened Wendy. Turns out Molly is gone. No trace of her. Huck checks and Molly was paid $100k yesterday. She was a plant by the real mole. Abbey’s first thought is of Rosen’s safety since they sent him back home after assuming the mole was dead. She rushes to his apartment and tells Rosen he isn’t safe, get some things and get back to office.
That night Olivia calls Cyrus to tell him Osborne wasn’t the mole. Cyrus says that can’t be, The President announced it on National Television. Olivia says she is trying to help him but he accuses her of trying to sabotage The White House. Olivia says she isn’t letting this go. Unfortunately she has this conversation on her couch so Jake is watching the whole thing. Jake meets with his contact to tell him he is going to have to take care of Olivia now that she knows.
Olivia meets with Osborne’s widow to tell her she was right. Now Olivia will try to clear his name and get the proof the White House will need to believe them.
They start looking into Molly. Harrison is going to work his contacts to see if he can’t get flight manifests but Rosen who is now in the office says he has contacts in Homeland Security. He will get Molly on a no-fly list and have her detained.
Rosen: Gladiators in helmets, right?
Harrison: *rolls eyes* suits.
Huck starts tracing the money Molly received. He and Quinn come up with a storage unit rented by the same account that sent the money to Molly. They go to check it out.
At the storage unit Huck goes to the unit and leaves Quinn on watch in the parking lot. In the unit Huck finds a crate under a tarp. He opens it and it is empty. Someone comes up behind him and hits him on the back of the head with a crow bar…repeatedly.
Quinn gets worried when Huck doesn’t come back out so she goes into the office of the storage facility. She talks the desk guy into letting her look around. The facility is 10 floors though so that makes it difficult.
Quinn calls Harrison freaking out she can’t find Huck. He tells Quinn to handle it because they just got a lead on Molly. They have to get to the airport before she boards a plane to Belize.
Quinn goes back into the storage facility office and talks the guy into showing her the camera feeds. She pulls out her Gladiator to get it done and for the first episode in a long while I actually like her.
At the airport Rosen, Abbey and Harrison talk to Molly. Molly says she didn’t do it for the money; she did it because she didn’t want to end up dead, which is what they threatened her with. She is sorry but she can’t talk to them and they have to let her go.
Quinn is watching the security feed when she sees Huck on the third floor. He is only there for a moment though and then he goes off camera.
Quinn is on the third floor of the storage facility when she sees something. She runs back down to the office. The security cameras are off, one was turned around so a hallway would be hidden, she grabs the keys and opens every storage unit in the hallway until she gets to the empty one with the crate. She busts open the crate to find Huck tied up and shaking. He is blurry eyed and doesn’t speak.
Quinn gets Huck back to the office where he is still not saying anything. He is in a closet in the corner rocking himself back and forth. Rosen said Huck is much worse right now then he was after being water boarded for days and Harrison can’t get Olivia on the phone.
Harrison’s phone rings, it’s the medical examiner calling. Molly is in his morgue, hit and run.
Quinn finds security feed of the guy who came in and out of the storage unit before and after Huck went missing. He is wearing a baseball cap and they think he is working for the mole but they can’t see his face. A moment later Charlie calls Cyrus and he is wearing the same baseball cap.
A Tale of Two Marriages: At the White House Cyrus is talking to Mellie and Fitz about an interview they had scheduled. It is the first interview since the attempted assassination and the birth of their baby. Cyrus stresses they need to look in love and happy. Not “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf or Macbeth” both of which they are portraying at that moment.
They promise to give good fairytale, they’ve been pretending for the cameras for decades now.
Mellie says they can’t all have a perfect marriage like Cyrus and James. We then see Cyrus and James arguing. James has kicked him out of the house and Cyrus is living in a hotel. Cyrus wants to come home but James says he needs time.
At the White House Cyrus goes over the talking points of the interview with Fitz. Fitz asks about Cyrus’s living situation. He tells Cyrus if you love James don’t give up on him. He’s clearly not just talking about James and Cyrus.
Mellie and Fitz are doing their interview and Olivia is watching in her living room. She listens to them recount their first date. They really do pretend quite convincingly.
Across town James comes in to find Cyrus laying on their bed reading. He tells James he checked out of the hotel, he is moving back in. James says no Cyrus lies for a living and he can’t trust him. Cyrus says he told James the truth about stealing the White House and now he is paying for it. He tells James he doesn’t get to keep a list of his crimes and use it against him. James brings up the perjury in front of the Grand Jury and Cyrus says James lied to the Grand Jury because he was choosing Cyrus and love over justice. Now it’s not sitting so well with James that he chose his own happiness. Cyrus says James is upset that he now knows he is capable of making a choice like that and that is what is keeping him up at night.
Cyrus finishes his great speech with, “I love you anyways because that is the man I am.”
Fitz is in the Oval Office watching the interview when Mellie walks in. She says the interview went well; everyone loves the story of how they met. Fitz asks her if she even remembers the actual story of how they met. Fitz’s Dad came to Boston and takes him to dinner, which was odd, to meet up with an old college buddy of his Dad’s. The friend happened to bring one of his clerks with him, Mellie. Fitz’s Dad never liked his choice in women. Mellie was old money, blue blood through and through. A thoroughbred. Fitz said it wasn’t even a blind date it was a merger. Fitz’s Dad and his friend shook hands and basically sold Mellie to Fitz. He calls it one step away from prostitution and wonders if it ever bothers Mellie, all the lies and pretending. Mellie says pretending is what’s real; it’s what every married couple does. It’s delusional to think otherwise. Fitz says he is sorry if he did this to her, or maybe she was always like this. It is a very real moment between them.
That night Cyrus gets a call on his cell from Fitz. He wants to know if Cyrus worked things out with James. Fitz then admits out of nowhere that he killed Verna and Cyrus doesn’t know what to say, he is speechless for once. Fitz asks if she would forgive him if she knew. Cyrus doesn’t have to be told that the “she” is Olivia.
Cyrus: There are things we don’t tell them, things we never tell them, things we bury, things we hide. That’s the job. You did something, sir. It doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be happy.
Jake & Olivia Sitting in a Tree: Jake is in Olivia’s home taking down his surveillance cameras because it is sweep day. Huck and Quinn come in every third Wednesday of every month to sweep for bugs. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Really? Once a month and always on the same schedule? I am so very annoyed with this whole camera thing. If I think this is ridiculous then someone with actual spy knowledge must be pulling their hair out watching this.
As soon as they leave Jake comes back in and reinstalls his cameras. He has the nerve to call Olivia while still in her apartment. He calls Olivia to tell her they are having dinner tonight, he is going to come over and cook her dinner. She says she can’t have dinner, she has to work. She will take a rain check though.
Later that night Jake is at home when his doorbell rings. He turns off the cameras and puts away what looks like a murder kit (duct tape, rope, a gun). It’s Olivia with dinner, that Fitz & Mellie interview really did a number on her. She sets her purse down and when she turns away Jake grabs her phone and turns it off.
Olivia and Jake are having their burgers and he is talking her into having beer with hers instead of wine. He calls her special and fancy. She gives in.
Olivia goes to check her phone and Jake says no, if she checks her phone she will have work and leave and then he won’t have the chance to hold her hand, pull her close and kiss her. It has a little more finesse then Fitz saying “Take off your clothes” but it really just doesn’t have the same heat/chemistry. Olivia opts not to go back to work and instead kisses Jake back. Clothes come off, music swells, etc…
Jake is asleep in bed with Olivia who slips out of his bed to get some water. She takes a sip and decides to watch some TV. She pushes a button on the remote and a wall opens up. One more button and her whole apartment pops up on the screens. She drops her water and from behind her Jake says, “It’s not what you think.” He wants her to sit down hear him out. She tries to run but he grabs her and in the struggle she hits her head before falling to the floor. He says he isn’t going to hurt her he was just trying to protect her. She says from who and he turns her head to look at the screens where a man in a mask with a gun has entered her apartment. Olivia looks up at Jake and starts to lose consciousness, he touches her head and his hand comes away with blood on it. She blacks out.
At the hospital Jake is standing over Olivia as she comes out of her concussion. Jake says he doesn’t have time to explain everything but she was at her house, there was a break in and Jake showed up and saved her, does she understand. That was the first time they met. As he says the last words Secret Service show up and Fitz is right behind them. Fitz shakes Jake’s hand and thanks him for being there for Olivia.
Fitz: Hi
I put the quote even though it is just one word because he only has to say “hi” and it wrecks me.
He sits on Olivia’s bed touches her face and hugs her. Something Jakes sees from the hallway and there is really no mistaking that touch and hug for simple concern.
So…what do you think? Is Cyrus the mole? He is capable of some terrible things which I tend to forget from time to time. And what is up with Jake? Is he good? Is he bad? It looks like Fitz is coming back around to his old self but I think it may be too little too late for Olivia, right now anyway. I am not sure how I’m going to wait three weeks for the next new episode.
