MODERN FAMILY: Schooled
We were lucky to get a double dose of Modern Family last night and what a fun night it was. In the first episode, we begin with Phil toasting to Hailey because she is leaving for college the next day (I know, it’s hard to believe she got in to a college, but it is TV). Mitch chimes in and adds Lily to the toast because she is starting Kindergarten the next day and Manny shares that Gloria and Jay are starting parenting classes also (mostly to please Manny). Jay doesn’t think it is necessary since he has raised two children, cut to Claire and Mitch fighting in the kitchen. Maybe those parenting classes aren’t such a bad idea.
The Dunphy’s are sad to see Hailey leave. Luke wears a mask so she won’t she him cry and Phil admits that saying goodbye to Hailey in her dorm room will be the most emotional he has been since the first time he saw Air Bud (that movie got me too). He plans to give her a book called “Phil’s-Osophy” which is a collection of life lessons he has learned like “If you get pulled over for speeding, tell the cop that your spouse has diarrhea.” Classic Phil.
Cam and Mitch drop Lily off for her first day of school and Cam gets emotional but Lily runs off to play without a worry. Before they leave they hear Lily yell “Ow. That hurts!” and there was a little boy (Conner) pulling her hair. In a split second Cam picked up the little boy and threatened to peck his eyes out if he ever touched his daughter again. The teacher made Cam apologize to the boy for using his hands instead of his words and then he went to the principal’s office. Uh Oh.
The principal called the Conner’s parents and when they came in, they were lesbians. Cam and Mitch feel they have nothing in common with lesbians. Of course the Moms and the Dads did not get along, so the principal gave them some homework. They had to have a family play date with the hope that they can get along and set a better example for their children.
The kids get along pretty well during the play date, but it gets a little catty between Cam and one of the mothers. They decide to leave but Lily and Conner locked themselves in her room. After the kids come out, Cam, Mitch and the Moms realize they do have something in common. They both want to protect their children.
Jay and Gloria went to the parenting class, but did not take it seriously. They were making jokes and not paying attention. Gloria didn’t like how the teacher talked to them so they left. When they got home, Manny was waiting for them and was very disappointed that they left the class 3 hours early. Jay reassures him that he will not let anything happen to the new baby or to Manny.
Claire and Phil are trying to help Hailey in her new dorm room, but they are embarrassing her more than anything. Phil grabbed her new roommate’s butt thinking it was Claire and then they knocked over a bag filled with condoms (that Claire bought for Hailey) in front of her new roommate’s Dad. Awkward! They want to stay and help but Hailey just wants them to leave. Phil gave her his book of “Phil’s-Osphy” before they left.
Hailey reads the book before bed and calls Phil and Claire. They were trying not to get emotional in the car, but when she called Claire almost lost it. Hailey thanked them for everything and told them that she loved them and that she will miss them. So sweet!
Modern Family airs Wednesday nights at 9/8c on ABC.
