NBC

Another SMASH Casting Announcement

By  |

Sheryl Lee Ralph

The folks over at Vulture have broken the news that actress Sheryl Lee Ralph will play the mom to Jennifer Hudson‘s recurring character on the second season of Smash.

Ralph originated the role of Dreamgirls Deena Jones on Broadway, which was the part played Beyonce in the 2006 film that earned Jennifer Hudson an Oscar for her role of Effie White.

Hudson will play Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning star “who reached [her] Broadway dream but paid a price for it”. Ralph will play her mom, Cynthia, but no other character details are available right now.

Smash does not have an official return date yet, but is expected to return to NBC during mid-season.
