CONTINUUM Recap: Season 1, Episode 7 “The Politics of Time”
What can an affair do to a couple? It doesn’t seem to matter whether the affairs takes place in 2012 or 2077, an affair is an affair. And it can have far-reaching effects.
Case in point: In 2077, Kiera and her husband Greg are out for a celebratory dinner with their married friends Rikki (guest star Paula Elle) and Trevor (guest star Jim Thorburn); but Trevor seems to have other “things” on his mind when he makes a pass at Kiera in the restaurant bathroom. And, as it turns out, when Kiera tells Rikki about the pass, she seems nonplussed about it especially given the fact that she had a fling with Greg prior to his marriage to Kiera. This news, of course, comes as a shock to Kiera, making her begin to question her husband Greg. He claims that he will never lie to her again, but given the few strange occurrences that have transpired, did he keep his promise or not?
Meanwhile, in present day, Carlos gets a call from a friend who needs his help. As it turns out this friend is Jim Martin (guest star Tahmoh Penikett), who is running for president of the largest shipping union in the country, who had a verbal altercation with fellow friend Alicia Fuentes (guest star Pascale Hutton). Alicia is a local reporter, who has proof that there were financial irregularities in Jim’s campaign. Carlos was called in to get Alicia out of there; and once home, she and Carlos have sex. The next morning, he and Kiera land a murder case involving Alicia as the victim. The problem is Carlos keeps that truth quiet until Kiera eventually figures out that he was there thanks to help from first Betty and then from Alec. He then comes clean with the Captain and is suspended.
As it turns out, Alicia was strangled by an unknown assailant; that is until Kiera and Alec use satellite codes that Kellog somehow acquired in order to keep track of Kagame and the members of Liber8. Using these codes in conjunction with Kiera’s suit and her CMR, Alec and Kiera are able to see what happened to Alicia when she was killed. Simultaneously, this same assailant broke into Carlos’s apartment attempted to kill him too, using him as a patsy for the crime. Luckily, Carlos got the better of the killer, cutting her arm in the process.
As the investigation comes to a head, Kiera and Carlos surmised that either Sara Davidson (guest star Jenn Bird), Jim’s campaign manager, or his wife Heather (guest star Sarah Edmondson) are the culprit. Heather doesn’t have the cut on her arm and neither does Sara, but Sara knows who committed the crime, but is too afraid of them to identify them. And, as it turns out, after Jim wins the election, Heather introduces him to Kagame and Garcia (who is the real culprit as she has the cut on her arm from the fight with Carlos). As president of the shipping union, he has access to all the ports and could be in line to be the next mayor, which seems to be exact what Kagame and Liber8 want.
What we learned in this episode:
• Kiera knows nothing about the joke “Denial – it’s just a river in Egypt” ;
• Nor did she seem interesting in talking to Alec about whether there is porn in 2077 or not;
• Her suit seems to be repairing itself and hooking Alec’s complex computer system up tenfold; and,
• Carlos, Jim and Alicia were friends since childhood, meeting up when their families immigrated from Columbia.
“The Politics of Time” is the 7th episode of the debut season of Continuum and was written by Sara B. Cooper and directed by Pat Williams. Continuum will be back with an all-new episode on the Canadian channel Showcase next Sunday, July 22 at 9 PM.
