NEW GIRL: Jess Defends Her Positivity & Love of Polka Dots
It’s Friday afternoon and things are winding down for the week here at Nice Girls HQ. But before we leave this work week behind, how about taking a moment to celebrate being happy?
A few weeks ago on New Girl, the impossibly adorable (or “adorkable”) Jess had to face the fact that Nick’s girlfriend, Julia, didn’t have a lot of respect for her. Cynical Julia just couldn’t buy that Jess was truly that joyful about life. In a moment of pure awesomeness, Jess decided not to allow Julia to chastise her for being an optimist, launching into this amazing speech:
“I brake for birds. I rock a lot of polka dots. I have touched glitter in the last 24 hours. I spend my entire day talking to children. And I find it fundamentally strange that you’re not a dessert person. It freaks me out. I’m sorry that I don’t talk like Murphy Brown. And I hate your pants suit. I wish it had ribbons on it or something just to make it slightly cuter but that doesn’t mean I’m not smart and tough and strong.”
As someone who has been accused of being “a Pollyanna” (and yes, I mean accused) throughout my life, I couldn’t help but give a fist pump and a woohoo for Jess. Being happy doesn’t mean you’re stupid. Wanting everything around you to be beautiful doesn’t mean you’re weak. So get out there and enjoy that weekend, Nice Girls! Bake some cupcakes! Embrace the use of glitter! Add ribbons to your pants suit!
Happy Friday!
