MODERN FAMILY: Aunt Mommy Recap

By  |

This episode lived up to its name with the topic of surrogacy (from a family member) as a possibility for Mitchell and Cam. They would like to have another baby but surrogacy isn’t something they really considered until Steven and Stefan (who already have their baby) mention the swirl method to them. Basically the “swirl” is a mixture of sperm from both men to fertilize one egg so you never really know who the father is (but in Steven and Stefan’s case is it obvious who the father is…I’m just saying).

MODERN FAMILY - "Aunt Mommy" - TY BURRELLSteven and Stefan finally buy a house from Phil (after he showed them the house 5 times) and Phil and Claire want to treat Cam and Mitchell to dinner to celebrate (and drink). They have a wonderful dinner and the wine was flowing. Claire talks about how wonderful her kids are and she knows they will survive in the world (they were left home alone and nothing disastrous happened so she’s feeling proud). Cam and Mitchell talk about trying to have a baby and the swirl method. After a few more glasses of wine, Claire has a perfect solution to their problem. She offers one of her eggs so they could have a baby that was half Pritchett and half Tucker (hence the name Aunt Mommy). Everyone thinks it a wonderful idea and they hug and cry and Phil says “It looks like we’re having a baby!” But let’s not forget they are all intoxicated.

MODERN FAMILY - "Aunt Mommy" - TY BURRELL, JULIE BOWENThe next morning when the hangover hits (and I mean it hits because Phil and Claire look like they were in a tornado) and reality sets in Claire knows she has made a big mistake. Mitchell also feels uneasy about it. They all go to Jay and Gloria’s for brunch and it is very awkward between the four of them when they first see each other. Claire and Mitchell avoid the topic trying to spare each other’s feelings. Alex and Haley overhear Claire and Phil talking about it and suddenly the whole family chimes in about the topic. The girls think their Mom is brave to offer her egg, Jay is totally against it and Gloria thinks it is a “freak show” but doesn’t want to get involved. Everyone is yelling at each other when Claire and Mitchell sneak under the table for a heart to heart. They both agree that it was not the best idea and there will be no baby (at least not with Claire’s eggs).

Back at home Cam and Mitchell see Lily playing in her room. They both realize that even though she isn’t their biological child, she is the best of both of them.

Manny and Gloria are hoping to go to a play together but Jay sabotages that plan when he learns that Manny has been invited to play football with some kids in the neighborhood. Jay tells Gloria’s friend that they won’t be able to make it to the play. He feels that Manny needs football and that Gloria will thank him one day (we all know that is not going to happen).

MODERN FAMILY - "Aunt Mommy" - ED O'NEILL, SOFIA VERGARAGloria and Jay cheer Manny on when he caught the ball and started running in for a touchdown. He stops mid-run to pick up a heads-up penny and gets tackled hard and down he goes. He and his mom have been collecting heads-up lucky pennies for years and once they get 100 (which this penny was the hundredth), they’ll buy a lottery ticket.

The next time we see Manny he is in a motorized chair because of his football injury (watching him trying to maneuver this chair was hilarious). They share memories from coins they found and Jay sees that Gloria doesn’t want it to end. He takes four pennies and tells Manny there was a mistake and he should recount. Gloria is appreciative of this gesture and already feels like she has won the lottery by having her wonderful family.

So what did you think of this episode? Do you think Cam and Mitchell will adopt or have a surrogate? Let me know your thoughts below.
