LOST GIRL Recap: “Can’t See the Fae-rest” (Episode 11)
As Bo and Kenzi gaze longingly at a beautiful jacket in a window display at a fancy downtown shop, they have an unexpected encounter with Dyson’s current love Ciara. Ciara goes out of her way to thank Bo, once again, for saving her life – and the lives of the others – during the whole body swap incident. As a way to thank her, she invites both of them out to lunch; but Kenzi feigns being sick in order to skate out of that dicey situation for which neither of them wants to be stuck.
Meanwhile at a ritzy party for what appears to be wealthy twenty-somethings, a couple are getting ‘busy’ in one of the bedrooms, but before any real action gets started, the man is attacked and he collapses to the floor. Soon enough Dyson and Hale are there to investigate the man’s murder because this is the third victim in two weeks and their Captain wants answers. And given the state of the man’s body – asphyxiation, internal bleeding and crushed bones – they both know it has to be a Fae who is either out of control or possibly a serial killer. Either way, they need to find out who is causing these deaths and stop them: fast
Since neither of them can get into these ritzy parties – where the murders have been taking place – they decide to enlist the help of Kenzi and Bo. It doesn’t take long for them to convince Kenzi – especially once vodka is mentioned – but getting Bo to give in took a little more work. She, of course, questioned how they would get in since they don’t have the money, clothes or influence to sneak inside. Enter Ciara – the one person that Bo and Kenzi were both hoping to avoid, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Ciara has the right connections and insists on even getting Bo the ‘right’ dress to allow her admittance. It also doesn’t hurt that Ciara has a guest list for the next ritzy party and she gives Bo some background on the key players who will be attending.
Show time is on with Bo and Kenzi all dolled up – Kenzi in yet another one of her colorful (no seriously, colorful as in pink) wigs and both of them in high end dresses – at the next party where they meet the host – Russell Cooper – and one of the regular attendees, Lita. Lita is a designer of high-end accessories and she gives one of her latest creations to Russell. In no time at all, Kenzi is distracting Russell with a tour of the apartment where the party is being held while Bo tries to talk some of the party-goers, meeting up with one of Russell’s best friends, Clive, who is a big-time software company guy, with a penchant for carrying around his tablet showing off pictures of his niece (at least that’s the case when Bo meets him).
Tragedy soon strikes, though, just as Kenzi thinks she has found some evidence in Russell’s office; but she is hit over the head and knocked unconscious while Russell reacts to an unseen force. When Kenzi wakes up on the floor of Russell’s office, she is flanked by two men – one who is dead (Russell) and one who was knocked out like she was (Clive). This, of course, freaks both of them (Clive and Kenzi) out, but also brings up the body count to four.
At the compound of the new Ash, however, Dr. Lauren is brought in to see The Ash as he had her rush an autopsy on an ancient Fae creature – much like a fairy – but he is unhappy with the results and wants her to do it again and be much more thorough. She explains to him that she is having a hard time personally, letting him know that she has new evidence in Nadia’s condition, but the Ash has no interest in hearing about that, demanding that she do the job he has laid over for her: to determine who is killing these ancient Fae.
Back at the police station, Kenzi is being questioned by a beat cop who is grilling her about her past indiscretions with the law, hoping to pin this latest murder on her simply by virtue of her being found with the dead guy. Fortunately Hale interrupts the questioning and asks Kenzi if she can remember anything before she was hit. The only thing that stood out to her was a business card holder that was made of snake skin that she found in Russell’s office. That item was made by Lita – the accessory designer who caught Bo’s attention at the party.
Before Bo is called in to answer questions from Dyson about the murder, she meets a woman named Maganda who appears to be homeless and suffering from some kind of mental illness as she speaks to Bo in riddles that, of course, make no sense. Bo is then called in to talk to Dyson and they review the floor plan of where Kenzi, Clive and Russell were found. Then Bo asks Dyson where Lita was, but he has no record of who that is as she wasn’t on the witness list. Bo remains suspicious of Lita, but also mentions Maganda to Dyson as she thinks perhaps this homeless woman saw something.
In order to figure out more about Lita, Dyson and Bo go to Ciara for more information. Bo is convinced that Lita is Fae and after some discussion they come to the conclusion that Lita could possibly be a snake shifter. The conclusion seems to be fit since all of her accessories are made from real snake skin (she uses her own skin for her designs?), all of the victims had a snake skin item in their homes from Lita and the way all of the men were killed is reminiscent of what snakes do to their victims.
Dyson tells Bo that she needs to talk to Lita in order to get more evidence; but Ciara makes it clear that Lita prefers men and that Dyson should go undercover as Bo’s fiancée; this way Lita will buy the ruse of Bo wanting her man to be more fashionable by having Lita provide him with a new wardrobe, which is what Lita had done for many of the people at the ritzy parties, including the victims. Both Dyson and Bo are uncomfortable with that idea, but they relent when Ciara says, “we’re all friends, right?” And to make matters worse (at least in Bo’s mind) Ciara shares, “I trust you, Bo”. No pressure there, right?
Soon enough, Dyson and Bo meet with Lita, asking her to make Wendell (Dyson’s cover) more fashionable like Russell (the latest victim), but this begins to make Lita nervous. She gives the excuse that she actually double booked herself and gathers her things to leave. Knowing that they could lose her at any moment, Dyson confronts her about being Fae and in her defense she shoots venom from her mouth into Dyson’s eyes, proving Bo’s theory that she is a snake Fae. Thankful Dyson wasn’t hurt by the venom because of his own wolf Fae background, but he is temporarily blinded, making it necessary for Bo to take off in hot pursuit of Lita, who races out of her office and then out of the building. But before Bo can catch Lita, she runs straight into the strange homeless woman Maganda again directly outside Lita’s office building. Thankfully, Dyson comes out of the building, tackling Lita before she can get away.
Back in Lita’s office, after the guards from the Ash’s compound have taken Lita into custody and sedated her, Dyson and Bo are going through her files looking for more evidence. What they find has Dyson stumped as Lita has had dealing with man named Heinze – who is also Fae. The reason it is unusual is because Lita has a very specific type: young, rich and hot and Heinze is none of those things because he is an ex-navy man and is much older. This calls for a meeting with Heinze at Trick’s bar where they can learn from the source what kind of dealings Lita is having with him. Turns out he not only sells her exotic goods for her accessories but also rats from all of his ships for her feeding pleasure. He doesn’t really provide them with much detail, claiming he has an important art show to get to and he departs just as Dyson gets a call that Lita is now awake. He and Hale go to the Ash’s compound to question her about why she ran. She claims she didn’t want to get in trouble for selling her own skin, but she flatly denies having anything to do with the murders.
It is now back to square one for Bo and Kenzi because the victims were crushed to death and when faced with a problem Lita used her venom and not physical power. The duo, along with Ciara, who showed up at Trick’s bar, and ended up talking with them about the case surmise that they got the wrong Fae, causing Kenzi to call Clive – the other guy from the party who she and Hale, earlier in the day, informed should now be safe because Lita was in custody. Kenzi reaches Clive but before she can tell him what is happening, he is attacked and found dead not that much later.
Kenzi, of course, is very upset, thinking it is her fault that Clive was left unprotected, but Bo assures her that isn’t the case. They are then interrupted by Heinze who is trying to sell off some of his antiques to the patrons at the bar, which gets him kicked out by Trick
Back at the Ash’s compound, Lauren is explaining her findings in the deaths of the ancient Fae fairies to the Ash. It seems they were electrocuted and Lauren has a possible theory as to why, but she attempts to make a deal with the Ash in exchange for the information on the nail that seems to be the key to Nadia’s comatose condition. She begs for access to the former Ash’s journals, which could lead her to a way to cure Nadia, but the new Ash declines her request, demanding, instead, that she do the job he has placed before her. Obviously this upsets Lauren greatly, as she rips off the necklace that signifies her commitment to the Ash and he has her dragged away by his guards.
The entire team – Bo, Kenzi, Hale, Dyson and Ciara – is now at Trick’s bar going back over Lita’s client list in an attempt to track down the real killer, but Bo keeps going back to the homeless woman Maganda, who seems to have been at all the sights where the murders took place. This gets them talking about what was in her grocery cart which was knocked over when Bo ran into her while chasing Lita: all kinds of items made out of wood. That fact makes Bo remember some of the strange things Maganda was telling her at the police station about losing her home, which in turn, makes Trick suspicious. He digs into one of his books and they figure out that Maganda is a Tree Fae. Her home was somehow destroyed and she is attempting to get all of the pieces back. According to Trick it is instinctual; she needs every piece of her tree back in order to feel whole.
It is at this moment that Kenzi notices that Maganda is inside the bar feverishly looking for something. That something turns out to be a walking cane left behind by Heinze when he was kicked out of the bar by Trick. As Dyson attempts to calm Maganda down, she grabs him around the chest and starts to crush him; it is then that Bo finds the cane. This gets Maganda’s attention and she releases Dyson. Bo then tauntingly guides Maganda down to the vault in Trick’s office where they trap her until they get Heinze back to face what he has done.
As it turns out, he left the cane at the bar because he didn’t want anyone else to get hurt because he knew what Maganda was doing, but Trick is convinced he did it to simply save himself. But the real problem still remains, Heinze was involved in the destruction of Maganda’s home – her tree – and he will have to reclaim every piece of her tree – that has since been made into all kinds of items – in order for her to stop her from killing anyone else.
Later on Bo and Ciara have a bit of a heart-to-heart talk with Bo admitting that if it was Ciara’s intention to make Bo her friend, she has succeeded; but Bo can tell that Ciara isn’t completely happy. She tells Ciara that she really needs to talk to Dyson and be direct with him about what she wants. This leads to Ciara stepping up and telling Dyson what she needs out of their relationship: she loves him and she needs to know that he feels the same way. And while Dyson seems to falter for a few seconds, he tells Ciara that “he will give her everything he can and will do his very best to make her happy”. (How long will that be the case, though?)
In the final scene, Bo is at the Ash’s compound where Maganda is being held for everyone’s safety especially her own, surrounded by just some of the items made from her tree returned to her by Heinze. Once Heinze has returned every piece, the Ash will arrange to ship her back to the jungle with all of her goods. Bo thanks him for what he is doing and he claims he will do anything to protect their people; but as Bo leaves he walks toward one of the other cells, sliding back the part of the door to reveal that Lauren is trapped inside the cell next to Maganda. As he closes the door slot, she is yelling at him to release her.
