COVERT AFFAIRS: Winter Finale is a Sister Act
Tonight’s winter finale of Covert Affairs on USA is being heavily promoted as an Annie/Auggie episode, but it’s really more of an Annie/Danielle episode.
Warning: minor spoilers ahead!
The finale sees Annie headed to Stockholm for some R&R. She takes newly single sister Danielle along for some girl time, but things quickly become complicated. You know, the usual. Danielle has contacted a man she knew as a boy when their dad was stationed in Germany and arranged for him to meet them at the airport. Annie is concerned; it’s been such a short time since Danielle split with her husband. Meanwhile, the CIA needs a courier in Stockholm, and since Annie is there already, she gets a working vacation. The mission escalates from there until both sisters find themselves running for their lives.
Annie’s family life is a nice addition to an otherwise rather generic spy tale. The fact that she told Danielle about her covert status so early in the show’s life has opened up potential storyline options and added a layer of emotional significance that was missing in the first season. Plus, I really like Anne Dudek as Danielle, so give her more screentime!
Speaking of people who need more screentime, Sendhil Ramamurthy’s Jai Wilcox should be given more scenes. The plan we’ve seen hints of so far this season comes to fruition in tonight’s episode, and it’s ingenious. Cannot wait to see what he does with the results of his strategic moves next season.
Now, what the Annie/Auggie fans have been asking about: does Annie reveal her feelings to Auggie? Does he reciprocate? What’s with all the mushy stuff in the preview? Look, some progress is made but it’s not as major as the preview leads you to believe. I don’t want to spoil, but I also feel like USA is manipulating ‘shippers, and that’s not cool. The sparks are there, definitely, and they have a couple of “moments” that promise good things to come, but this episode is more about the Walker sisters than Annie and Auggie.
Tune in to the Covert Affairs season finale tonight at 10/9c on USA, then come back and tell me what you thought about where the various storylines were left until next season.
