VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW: Superheroines and Fishtails on the Runway
Last night CBS aired the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which has become so much more than just a fashion show, over the years. The highlights were the Superheroine segment, the Aquatic segment, the steampunk-y “I Put a Spell on You” segment and Club Pink, which is always a whole lot of fun. CBS scored the night in ratings as well, boasting more than 10 million viewers and a 35% increase from last year for this show alone. What draws 10 million people to this participial;ar fashion show? The operative word is ‘fun’.
I used to be one of those women who couldn’t understand why so many other women got so excited over this show. Then five years ago I watched my first VS Fashion Show, and when I saw how the girls all played with Justin Timberlake on the runway, then danced as he sang backstage, I was hooked and I saw the magic. These girls have fun!
Each year they take us behind the scenes of the show and we watch as a wing breaks or an outfit needs a needle and thread, or someone needs more hairspray. All the human errors and things that could go wrong during a fashion show, all the while the girls are talking about where they can get the best cheeseburger or their favorite ice cream creation. Last night the girls had photo albums with them and they talked about what they were like as kids and teens. Dreams they had when they were younger, goals they’ve accomplished, things they wished they’d done differently and dreams that came true. It was sweet and yes, fun.
We watched as a sleeve was ripped on one of the outfits and Adriana Lima needing two or three people to peel off her costume while she was supposed to be on the runway in a different costume. Things can and do go wrong backstage, but when these girls take the runway, they make it look so easy and stress-free.
The girls also told on each other last night, outing the tech geek, the music lover, the photographer and the new mom. They are us!
Another thing I love about these girls is that they are not walking skeletons. They are beautiful and healthy and their look is totally attainable. They’re cute, funny, quirky and can ham it up with the best of them. Their lip-syncing to “Moves Like Jagger” proves that.
I have a few favorites from the night. I loved the superheroine themes. What fun to see ‘Pow!’ and ‘Bam!’ on sheer capes wrapped around sexy bra and panty sets. Only Victoria’s Secret could pull that off. Then the aquatic theme showcased the $2.5 million Fantasy Bra worn by the adorable Miranda Kerr. What a lineup! It was so beautiful and completely fed my love for all things that sparkle in pastel colors. Finally, the Club Pink collection. this is the part of the show that is all kinds of fun and color. The girls seem to love this one as well as they bounce down the runway looking like they’re having the time of their lives. They make you feel like you don’t want to miss out on the fun they are having and you want to be in their club.
Performers this year were Maroon 5, Kanye West, Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj singing her popular “Super Bass”, which all the girls really got into. Supermodel Chanel Iman was singing it as she took the runway.
I love these girls, each and every one of them. They are real, sexy, glamorous and complete Angels.
If you missed last night’s show, fret not because the CW is re-airing it on December 14th, at 9/8c. You can also catch it on the CBS website right now.
