LOST GIRL Recap: “It’s Better to Burn Out Than Fae Away” (Episode 6)

Vex and The Morrigan

What may seem like an idyllic girls’ night in with drinks and pizza at the apartment between Bo, Kenzi and Lauren is anything but because Lauren is regaling them with a story of her ill-fated high school prom, which bores Kenzi endlessly. Bo and Lauren are clearly flirting whether they realize it or not; and Kenzi can’t understand why Bo continues to hide Lauren from the Ash. Bo attempts to assure Kenzi that she “will do something clever” to save Lauren – she just hasn’t figured out what that will be yet.

Meanwhile, a street artist is tagging a wall in a non-descript alley when an elderly man approaches him. The old man chastises the artist for defacing his wall after striking him with what appears to be a scorpion tail. Instead of arguing back or just walking away, the artists picks up a gun, shooting the old man at point blank range.

This leads to the Dark Fae Mesmer Vex (recurring actor Paul Amos), who created havoc for both Bo and Dyson last season, meeting with The Morrigan (recurring actress Emmanuelle Vaugier) because the artist in question – Jason (guest star Dewshane Williams) – is one of her clients. His artwork has greatly upset Vex because it shows him killing someone – a secret kill that only Vex and The Morrigan knew about. Vex demands that The Morrigan launch a search for Jason, allowing him to interrogate Jason once he is captured.

Of course, given the fact The Morrigan is the head of the Dark Fae world – and despite the high-rank of Vex within their world – she turns him down. Instead, she sends her assistant Bianca (guest star Katie Boland) off to retrieve Bo, hiring her to track down Jason. She explains that Jason is in big trouble due to the old man he killed actually being a Dark Fae elder. The Morrigan tells Bo that she has gone and fallen in love with Jason, wanting him brought back alive. It is during this meeting between Bo and The Morrigan that we learn of Bianca’s ability – she is an Italian Fae with the ability to compel anyone to do anything she (or on behalf of The Morrigan) wants them to do.

After taking the job, Bo and Kenzi seek out help from Trick who, of course, warns them NOT to take the job. But since he knows full well that Bo won’t turn it down, he tells them that The Morrigan is the Dark Fae version of an evil muse; that they will need to take great care in working with her.

The duo then sets out to track down Jason by going to his last wall painting, hoping to find clues. As it turns out, Kenzi recognizes the tag of the wall art next to Jason’s latest piece, which leads them to Chris, an old friend of Kenzi’s from back in the day. Bo and Kenzi ask Chris about Jason, learning the two were buddies – spotters (a warning system to each other against getting caught) – until Jason got discovered.

Back at Trick’s place, they try to piece together why Jason is painting the deep dark secrets of the Dark Fae when Chris calls Kenzi to tell her that Jason showed up. But it wasn’t a friendly reunion between Jason and Chris because the latter ends up with a broken nose after Jason hits him with the butt of his gun.

The hunt is now on with Bo and Kenzi once again hitting the streets in hopes of tracking Jason down. Luckily (or maybe not), they run into him as he is working on another wall painting, but he shoots at them and races off, running directly into Vex, who has been following them all. Vex uses his mesmerizing ability, which unfortunately allows Jason to get away, but keeps Bo in her place and almost doing harm to herself. But never doubt the bond of “sisterhood” between Bo and Kenzi as Kenzi stands up to Vex, literally threatening his balls with a very sharp knife.

Despite his intentions toward her, Bo and Kenzi meet with Vex at Trick’s bar to discuss the case with Vex claiming that he is more popular that The Morrigan and that he believes Jason is doing her bidding by making the wall paintings as a way to bring him down. He tells Bo that he wants her to bring Jason to him so he can interrogate him; but she turns him down and sets out to tell The Morrigan that she is not going to take the case after all.

In the meantime, Kenzi heads back to the apartment and has a “heart-to-heart” talk with Lauren, telling her that if she hurts Bo again she will end her. But Lauren warns her that if she is trying to be Bo’s only human friend, then she is being nothing but selfish. Their conversation is interrupted by a knock at the door. Kenzi discovers several thugs on the other side and then The Ash shows himself. He is convinced Lauren is hiding there and has one of his men pick up Kenzi by her neck, nearly strangling her, until Lauren shows herself. In a bid to save Kenzi, she warns The Ash that Kenzi is under Bo’s protection and if he or his men harm her, she will report him to the Light Fae elders.

As The Ash signals his man to let Kenzi go, he gives Lauren an ultimatum: she must return to him in 24 hours or he will pull the plug on her research project. As the men leave the apartment, Kenzi tells Lauren that she can’t go back to them after that display on force; and Kenzi immediately calls Bo, filling her in on what happened. Bo is at The Morrigan’s office as she gets the call; and, of course, the muse overhears everything. She tells Bo that she can resign from the case, but if she stays on, she will give Bo the solution to Lauren’s problems with The Ash.

Bo takes that offer, telling the assistant Bianca that she’s going after Jason “full throttle” this time. Bo also gets some insight into how Bianca came to work for The Morrigan. Then she heads back to the apartment where she finds Kenzi passed out on the couch after drinking herself to sleep because of the encounter with The Ash and his men. This allows Bo and Lauren to finally give into their flirting having a hot night of sex.

The next morning, a rejuvenated Bo abruptly wakes up Kenzi who states, “I feel like a wet dog moved into my mouth and had puppies” before they head off to Trick’s bar to meet with Hale to get his help on the case. Seeing that Kenzi is suffering a bad hangover, Hale uses his siren powers on her and then arranges for the duo to meet with “The Eye” – a scary-looking one-eyed man – who can help them track down Jason.

The Eye uses his special brand of skills in exchange for a kiss from Kenzi – something she only does under protest – and the girls are on the hunt again for Jason. Soon enough, they find him, but he seems to be under either some kind of trance or drug-affected state. He aims his gun at them saying he isn’t finished yet – “there is something I have to do,” he says. He seems to hear voices and then collapses into some kind of epileptic fit.

Bo eventually gets Jason back to The Morrigan, who treats him like a wayward child and admits that she only told Bo she was in love with him so a “bleeding heart” like her would take the case. Bo pleads with The Morrigan to let Jason go free, but she declines saying she needs to find out just what kind of coo Vex is planning by using Jason against her.

In exchange for completely the case, The Morrigan gives Bo a small box, telling her that will save Nadia, who has to be saved first in order to save Lauren. This is the first time Bo (and the viewers) are hearing the name Nadia and with cold distain The Morrigan tells Bo that Nadia is Lauren’s girlfriend.

After the night she had with Lauren, Bo is obviously anger and when she runs into Vex outside her apartment, she shouts ‘why can’t anyone just tell me the truth” and slams the door on him. She then learns from Kenzi that Lauren is gone.

While Bo was taking Jason back to The Morrigan, Kenzi had been trying to figure out the images from Jason’s art, surmising that The Morrigan was planning to kill Vex. At the same time, the assistant Bianca is talking to a dominatrix client, who she sends after Vex to get him out of the picture because he is causing problems for The Morrigan.

As the dominatrix has her way with Vex, Bo and Kenzi get there just in time to interrupt their S&M match and her nearly killing him. Bo and Vex then storm into The Morrigan’s office and we learn that the real source of the problem was Bianca. She was controlling Jason, making him draw those images in order to bring down The Morrigan who ruined her life. Sadly, Bianca stabs herself and dies right in The Morrigan’s with neither Vex nor the evil muse seeming to care. Bo is helpless to stop her demise; but gets back at The Morrigan by sneaking Jason out of her compound and keeping him tied up in her apartment.

Now the real question is will Bo use the “gift” that The Morrigan gave her to save Nadia – which will save Lauren. Since Lauren lied to Bo about Nadia – and then had sex with her – Bo is torn between what to do. Does she save her? Confront her? Does she even have a right to be mad? Surprisingly, Kenzi defends Lauren saying that “maybe she has her reasons”

The last scene has Lauren walking into a very stark white room where you see a body inside some kind of dome. She talks to the person inside this dome, telling this person – who we can only assume is not only Lauren’s research project but probably also Nadia – that she is still trying to help her and that she would like for her to meet Bo because she takes care of her. “Imagine that. Somebody taking care of me for a change”, she sighs to the woman in the dome.
