Lost Girl Recap: “Scream a Little Dream”

By  |

Kenzi and household chores: two subjects that should never be mixed especially when a simple broom gets the better of our favorite succubus sidekick. It seems that Bo, in an effort to clean out the “wolf who shall not be named” from her life, has made Kenzi an unwillingly assistant in cleaning the apartment, which looks like a complete disaster.

Frank, the Doorman

Meanwhile on the other side of town, a doorman at a residential hotel greets an elderly woman wearing a bathrobe who seems confused. After a few seconds, she mumbles something unintelligible, runs back inside the hotel and collides right into a pillar, knocking herself out. As the doorman chases after her, he sees that all of the other residents are walking around as if in a trance.

Soon enough, Bo and Kenzi are meeting with Frank, the doorman, as he explains that he works at “The Crawford” where as a Light Fae it’s his job to take care of the people who live there. He claims they have gone insane and he has no idea what caused it, asking for Bo’s help as he thinks it is the Dark Fae who are hurting “his humans”. He convinces Bo to help once he states that he took this issue to the new Ash, but he didn’t care. In turn, Bo calls Dr. Lauren for her help.

Elsewhere, Kenzi is, once again, at Trick’s bar, this time telling him her tale of woe about cleaning the apartment with Trick suggesting that she could get a job. She deadpans, “Work for a living? Do I look like a chump?” At that precise moment, a man introduces himself to Kenzi as Mumphert, a Brownie (and not the little girl in a brown uniform kind) who will gladly come to her aid, providing cleaning services. He explains that he mainly works at night and will clean for free. In glee, she turns to Trick to make sure that he is safe to which he confirms that they will be fine with Mumphert around, as Brownies only eat honey in their porridge. “You’re safe; just don’t take him for granted,” he explains.

Back at The Crawford, Dr. Lauren is examining the same old woman from earlier while Bo cleans out vents in her apartment in an effort to determine what is causing all of them to be like walking zombies. From what Lauren has been able to determine there are no obvious signs of foul play so she will have to run lots of tests in her lab. During their conversation about what could have caused this problem, Bo asks Lauren if she is happy about being free from The Ash since the new Ash was named, but Lauren said “it’s complicated,” promising to explain everything to Bo when she can.

Kenzi and Bo

Upon returning to the apartment, Bo tells Kenzi that she spent six hours cleaning vents and gathering specimens, but they are still no closer to an answer. She is then surprised to find that not only is the apartment completely cleaned up but also there is a strange man in their home. Introductions are made as Mumphert serves her hot chocolate while Kenzi explains who and what he is.

That night Bo is awoken by a noise in the apartment; and as she goes to investigate, she finds Dyson in her shower. After a seductive moment together, he rips her heart out, causing Bo to wake up from the dream to find some kind of ghost-like creature on top of her. Tossing the creature aside, she spins her way through Bo’s bedroom, disappearing right through Kenzi, who comes to investigate.

Bo soon learns from Trick that the creature is called a ‘Mare’ – “like as in nightmare,” he explains. The Mare is a Dark Fae that feeds on humans by giving them bad dreams; that is how all of the residents at The Crawford were rendered insane, because the Mare can only affect people when they slumber. But it seems that the Mare has now set her sights on Bo. This leads Bo to visit Lauren in order to have some tests done; attempting to determine what kind of hold the Mare has on her. Because they are both Fae, the Mare has established a psychic connection with Bo, making it necessary for Bo to fight sleep in order to keep the Mare at bay for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, before Lauren is able to give Bo a pill that will help her to stay awake, the new Ash shows up with some of his men, demanding that his property – that being Lauren – come with him to the compound. Bo stands up for her against the Ash, but is begged by Lauren to not interfere and, most of all, to “stay awake”.

Bo and Lauren

Back at Trick’s bar, Kenzi is doing her best to keep Bo awake while Trick explains there is a way to ward off the Mare and possibly help the residents who have been affected. He shares there is a shy Fae called a “Baku” that can eat nightmares while the Baku’s pelt can ward off disease; but they are extremely difficult creatures to track down.

Meanwhile, not all is well back at the apartment between Mumphert and Kenzi as she has neglected to keep him stocked with honey cereal and he has become despondent, refusing to work.

In an effort to see Lauren, Bo goes to the Ash’s compound, asking to see her, but is turned down once again; but not before she has another unexpected encounter with the Mare. Bo soon learns from the Ash that Frank never came to see him and he knows nothing about the disease that is affecting the human residents. This revelation, of course, sets Bo on a race to Frank to find out the truth. She quickly learns that he is actually a Dark Fae known as a Sandman, who is able to make anyone sleep. He and his girl Connie – who is the Mare – arranged this plan so she could feed because she is pregnant. They went after Bo because Connie is “eating for six” and needed a “juicy Fae” to fill her up because the humans just weren’t enough.

As Bo works to escape from Frank and Connie, she reaches out to Kenzi for help, who turns to Mumphert with a giant supply of honey cereal and a huge favor since he has the ability to track down nearly anything. She begs him to bring her a fur wrapped inside the form of a Baku. While Bo fights the dreams set on her by the Mare, including a glimpse of herself as an old woman after losing everyone she loves, Kenzi shows up with a Baku, who simply hugs her as a way to eat away the dreams. But, she doesn’t snap out of it, as she is being held within the dream because of a vision of Dyson telling her that he wants her back. But, she is strong enough to defeat the dream and returns to herself.

She also finally defeats Frank and Connie, as she goes into labor. In turn, she throws that in the face of the new Ash, when she pays him a visit to chastise him for allowing the Mare to feed illegally in his territory. Surprisingly, he offers her a proposition – work freelance for him and he’ll even pay her; but she, obviously refuses him.

Back at the apartment, Mumphert tells Kenzi that he is leaving to live with the Baku as he is needed there more and they part as friends while she promises Bo that she will stand guard so that Bo can finally get a full, uninterrupted, night of sleep.
