Kate Mulgrew Takes On “Warehouse 13”
I was beyond excited to have the opportunity to join a conference call with the talented Kate Mulgrew recently. Kate began a four-episode arc on Warehouse 13 last night, playing Jane, a mysterious and powerful Regent. She talked about her role and what it was like on the set of another great Syfy show. “I come as a very powerful Regent bearing an extraordinary secret. And when the secret is revealed I think the audience will be, to say the least, quite surprised. It’s both wonderful and rather frightening at the same time.”
I was a great fan of “Star Trek: Voyager” and thrilled with Kate’s portrayal as the ship’s captain. I was sorry when the series came to an end, but it was done so well, and we were given seven fun years watching the crew make its 75-year journey home. “I had a very, very active and significant hand in Endgame; I liked it, I helped compose it, I helped sort of decide what the ending should be,” Kate says. “I think that there was no more graceful or passionate way to say goodbye than to have the Admiral die and the Captain go on.”
Women in science fiction have evolved to a wonderful, respected new status, and Kate was among the leaders helping to change that view. “The women are grounded and exalted at the same time, which is of course what a good female character should be. We have dimensionality, we have great truth, we have power, we don’t have to sacrifice our femininity, we have honesty, and most importantly we have humanity. So indeed, it is growing.”
Now, Kate Mulgrew brings that feminine power to the Warehouse and you can bet that it’s going to be nothing less than stellar. Her advice to wanna-be actors up and coming? “And if you don’t have the confidence in yourself pretend that you do. That goes a long way. Never be late, never be sorry — no apologies, no complaints. Know what you’re about and do it as well as you can.” Choice words from someone who has followed all of them, and remains kind and gracious; someone that I admire still no matter what ship she captains.
