True Blood Recap: “Let’s Get Out of Here” and Into Sookie’s Dream

By  |
Sookie to Eric & Bill: “I propose that the two of you – are MINE!”
Yes please, thank you! I’m all for that! I think this dream and Mavis’s complete back story were the highlights of this week’s episode of True Blood, “Let’s Get Out of Here”. This was another strong episode which showcased some excellent acting done by Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis and Kevin Alejandro.  Not to mention the genius of the writing team in taking us on all those journeys to get to the season finale, which is only a few short weeks away.
Let’s start off with that dream, shall we? Bill feeds Sookie his blood to heal her, so of course there will be dreaming. This scene comes from book 5, “Dead as a Doornail“, where Sookie imagines a threesome after taking both vampires’ blood.
“I had a sudden mental picture of us all three climbing in the double bed in the little bedroom. Instead of duking out our conflicts, or talking out our problems, we could…no. I could feel my face flame red, as I was torn between semihysterical amusement and a big dash of shame at even thinking the thought. Jason and his buddy Hoyt had often discussed (in my hearing) that every male’s fantasy was to be in bed with two women. And men who came into to the bar echoed that idea, as I knew from checking Jason’s theory by reading a random sample of male minds. Surely I was allowed to entertain the same kind of fantasy?”
Where Sookie stops her train of thought, True Blood actually shows it to us. Wonderful! Being inside Sookie’s head is often very funny and I’d love to see more of this. In her dream, Sookie owns her house again and Eric comes to the door looking very much like the old Eric, before amnesia. They begin kissing and then, suddenly there’s Bill. When Eric wants to know what Bill is doing there, he tells him, “Ask Sookie. It’s her dream.” She picks up on those words right away. Of course this is her dream, and can’t she do and have whatever she wants in it? The boys want to make Sookie choose between them but The Sook doesn’t feel she needs to. She’ll take them both! Good for you, Sookie! She turns the tables on these two by bringing up a very good point: if guys can have more than one woman, why can’t she have both Bill and Eric? So she tells them it’s all or nothing. In her dream, Sookie puts aside the demure little girl and plays the naughty girl role, complete with red lingerie and black heels. Gran would have a stroke. Unfortunately, Sookie wakes up to reality, but this dream is still very much with her. I hope she brings it to life.
The witches are all being held at The Goddess Emporium by Antonia. After that skirmish in the cemetery, they want out, and fast. All except Roy, who is having a great old time being Antonia’s pet. Eric is under her spell and being kept locked away until she sends him out later to kill King Bill. Meanwhile, Tara is having second thoughts about Antonia and discovering that this is not at all what she bargained for.
Heartbroken after watching Alcide pick up Sookie in the cemetery, Debbie Pelt goes to see Sookie, but on the way, she picks up some V and takes the whole vial. Debbie falls off the wagon. She shows up at Sookie’s house and starts talking about Alcide. Sookie, reads her mind and finds that all Debbie is thinking about is how much she loves Alcide. Trusting Debbie, she takes her offer of help and the two hatch a plan to get Eric back from Antonia. It’s difficult to tell if Debbie really wants to help Sookie or if she’s setting Sookie up, or if she’s just hyped up on V. Time will tell, but I don’t think it will end well, especially because of the V.
The women go to The Goddess Emporium, and as Debbie distracts Antonia, Sookie climbs in a back window and looks for Eric. She finds him, but Tara finds Sookie at the same time and holds her at gunpoint. Antonia is screaming for Tara not to shoot Sookie because she could be of use to her, and Tara encourages Sookie to read her mind, where she tells Sookie what Antonia is planning and where to find Bill to warn him. She instructs Sookie to attack her, making it look like Sookie fought her way to escape. Sookie climbs in Debbie’s car and they take off, but Debbie looks a tad disappointed that Sookie has escaped.
Hoyt gathers up all of Jessica’s things and throws them in a box, marking it ‘For You, Monster”. How mean! Lafayette, under the possession of Mavis, walks into the house with baby Mikey. Hoyt’s house used to be hers when she was alive. I love the history here. When Hoyt questions Lafayette, he pulls out the gun he took from Andy and waves it at Hoyt, telling him to get out of her house. Hoyt calls Jason and tells him what happened and Jason, Andy, Arlene and Terry head over to Hoyt’s house. Andy is high on V, so he storms up to the door and kicks it in. Lafayette begins shooting at him and Jason. Jesus arrives on the scene and goes in to get the baby back for Arlene.
Here’s where we finally get the whole story of what happened to Mavis. Jesus makes her realize that she is dead and that she is currently residing inside Lafayette, and that Mikey belongs to another woman who is missing her child. Mavis says that she wants to find her baby, so Jesus takes her back to the night she died, to find out what happened. It is not clear whether the baby died from illness or if the father killed him, but we do find out that he killed Mavis. She remembers watching herself die and then the master goes out in the backyard and starts digging. Jesus and Jason dig up the grave of Mavis and her baby, Jesus uses his power to free Lafayette of Mavis, and Mavis takes her baby and goes off for good. By this time, I was in tears. I am a complete sucker for good ghost stories, especially stories dating back to the 1700’s and 1800’s. This was a perfect way for the showrunners to show how Jesus and Lafayette together can be a formidable force. Perhaps they will help get rid of Antonia?
Jason helps Hoyt fix his front door and sees the Monster Box. Hoyt gives it to him and asks that he drop it off at Jessica’s house, because he doesn’t want to see her anymore. Jason brings the box to Jess and they end up in the back of Jason’s truck. Apparently, Hoyt calling Jess a monster was enough of a green light for Jason to pursue Jessica. Added to the fact that he had had her blood. Good times for Jason!
For the rest of the show, Sam and Luna take Emma camping; Tommy pays Marcus a visit, disguised as Sam, and it looks like Tommy is trying to draw Marcus away from Sam by sacrificing himself. Marcus and the werewolves beat the tar out of Tommy until Alcide puts a stop to it and takes Tommy out of there, but only after Tommy shifts back into himself. How sad that all the time Tommy is swearing Sam’s innocence regarding Luna, Sam and Luna were getting it on in the tent.
Nan and Bill attend the tolerance event and Antonia shows up to begin her attack with Eric and Roy-boy at her side. They glamour Blackburn and the two other sheriffs, forcing them to help her in the attack. Sookie walks in on all of this and screams for Bill to run and the episode ends.
The wonderful craziness continues next Sunday night at 9/8 Central, only on HBO and HBO GO.
