Rueben's Ramblings
Christmas the NiceGirls Way
Every family has special holiday traditions that they follow each year; whether it’s decorating their home in specific ways, having a special meal on the big day or visiting family and friends for holiday parties. As I was growing up back in Pennsylvania, my family gathered around the tree every Christmas morning to open gifts and enjoy all the wonders that was held within each box. We would sit around and relax, enjoying our gifts until later in the day when my late mother would prepare our traditional Christmas dinner. And then we would round out the day with a Christmas movie on TV.
Those traditions, of course, altered and changed over the years as my brothers and I grew older and they moved out, starting families of their own. But, watching a Christmas movie on the big day always held true with my parents and me. And, while one of my older brothers and parents have passed on and I have minimized my holiday celebrations, I still enjoy watching a Christmas movie on the big day.
This year the big movie to look forward to is the new Doctor Who holiday movie entitled A Christmas Carol that will air simultaneously in the UK and here in the States. If you have BBC America as part of your cable service, then you can tune in to the movie at 9 PM, watching as newlyweds Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) are trapped on a crashing space liner, and the only way The Doctor (Matt Smith) can rescue them is to save the soul of a lonely old miser (Michael Gambon from Harry Potter franchise).
What is even better for the upcoming holiday weekend is that BBC America will be airing a Doctor Who marathon, starting at 12 midnight on December 24 leading up to the debut of A Christmas Carol the following night.
As a relative new Doctor Who fan, I became captivated by the show when it was relaunched – so to speak – with Matt Smith appearing as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as his new companion Amy. While I did watch the show when Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant both played the Doctor, I was only an occasional viewer. However, that changed when the current cast line-up took place. I can’t really say why my enjoyment of the show is so different with Smith and Gillan in the lead roles as opposed to the time Eccleston and Tennant were the Doctor; but I’m hooked. And, I cannot wait for not only the marathon but also the holiday movie this weekend.
I hope that whatever your holiday traditions are, you enjoy them to the fullest and revel in the time spent with your family and friends. Happy Holidays!!
