Rueben's Ramblings
Step Inside Caprica
This past Sunday a couple friends and I had the opportunity to attend a special screening of the first new episode of Caprica since its mid-season finale back in March. The screening, which included appearances by cast members – Alessandra Torresani, Sasha Roiz and Esai Morales as well as Executive Producers Ron Moore, David Eick, Jane Espenson and Kevin Murphy – was held at Universal Studios in Hollywood for 500 fans lucky enough to get entrance into the Globe Theatre at the studio.
As most readers here at NiceGirlsTV have figured out by now, I am a big fan of sci-fi/genre shows. I was captivated by the reboot of the Battlestar Galactica series early this past decade – and was even a fan of its predecessor when it aired in the 1970’s. So, as you can imagine, I was totally on-board for the prequel series Caprica from the first rumblings of the series being developed.
While very different from the revamped version of Battlestar Galactica, the new series Caprica obviously takes a lot of credence from its forefather. It is dark and gritty; it delves into a well- established family as well as introducing a whole new cast of characters, which set in to motion the story arcs that are so well-known today. It even gives a glimpse into what our possible future could be in terms of robots and advanced technology. And, it allows us to question our own beliefs and wonder where humanity may end up because of those beliefs.
In essence, Caprica is a series that mirrors our own society and what may or may not happen to mankind depending on the decisions we all make: good, bad or otherwise.
While I don’t want to reveal any of the stories shown in the mid-season premiere of Caprica, as that just isn’t fair to provide in-depth or even minor spoilers, I will say that it was a unique experience watching the premiere with the cast and crew and a large room full of avarice fans. Nothing else compares to that. I will, however, say this much: there is an appearance by actress Meg Tilly in a role very different from any other she has done – some viewers may not even recognize her at first. And, there are some great twists and surprises so make sure not to miss a minute of it.
You can watch the return of Caprica tonight at 10 PM on Syfy.
